LVfalconfan 306
So I was just thinking about our defense, and a lot of people on here are firm believers in build in the trenches, I think a dominate d line makes the rest of our defense look like pro bowlers. IF we got haynesworth would you guys still want a Defensive end early? I mean if JA98 can't be succesful on the same line as Haynesworth abe and babineuax he is in worse shape than I thought. Man thinking about this makes me happy im not the GM, Do we take Haynesworth than Delmas from Michigan or do we go after sean jones? In my opinion the more we get in the draft the better of we are, After this off season what is your dream Defense looking like? Do we get haynesworth than Delmas or sean jones and a d lineman in the draft or lb. In the end I know that Smith and TD are gonna give us a defense that will make offenses scared.Just for fun does anyone know what kind of shape jacksonvilles defense was in before smith came along, And do you guys think we will change schemes and be more aggressive with the right players in place. falconcj21 4
i think that if we get haynesworth, anderson has to improve. i would either draft a te or lb(to replace brooking). and get a proven SS via FA and our de should be alot better.
texfalcfan 3
Once we get the "right" players in, we will get more aggressive. No doubt adding Haynesworth would improve the line play/pressure ten fold. I wouldnt mind drafting a pass rusher like english or johnson(if he falls). I would also LOVE it if Pettigrew fell to us at 24.I cant wait till free agency and the draft.
atljbo 21,355
if we sign Albert Haynesworth....... We will have to fill the rest of the positions with draft picks (safety & LB)Something is telling me that we will resign Michael Boley and move him to WLB.........another player that i like is Jonathan Vilma
E. T. 5,774
Point blank.....Mike Smiths defenses require a dominate d-line and fast linebackers. Im sure coach knows what is needed, but how we get it is the mystery.

Sean jones could be a good candidate. He is still young, and is a great player in a bad situation in cleveland. I think we do draft a linebacker tho, either larry english or james gingervitis from ohio state.

schwarzenegger321 2,685
I really don't think we are going to go after Haynesworth. It does not appear to be the nature of TD or coach Smith to go after one dominate guy and pay them everything. Teams that do this (generally) only have a couple of years to take a shot at the superbowl and I believe that the whole intent from day one has been to build an organization that will constantly produce quality players that can impact the game year in and year out. Pittsburgh is notorious for doing this. They just won't pay one guy the bank and will let them walk. You really can't argue with this because they have 6 rings and seem like they are almost always in the playoffs. If the Falcons are going to become the dominate team we hope they are going to be picking up DT's at 12 million a year is not the way to go. Good teams have good coaching, a good front office, select wisely in the draft and build a good atmosphere from the inside out. They realize that there are going to be some off years but take those years to re-tool and get better. We do need to improve our defense and especially the Dline, but it is just dumb to pay one guy the type of money that Haynesworth's agent seems to want. Let him go to Oakland or Dallas or Cinn or some place like that (I realize he wants to stay around knoxville). I'm sure we will pick up a couple of quality free agents. If I had to guess I would say a good Dline man, probably a DE and a LB or SS. The rest will come from the draft.

E. T. 5,774
coach smith is not the defensive coordinator..BVJ is..Its his defense. So you're saying coach smith has no say on what he wants the defense to look like?
Matty-Ice-Baby 1
I think we go LB with the 1st pick. 1st round LB's are rarely "busts" making it a safe pick and it's a position of need. LB's are traditionaly able to have a bigger impact faster than other positions. I'm 50/50 on both Hayneswoth & Peppers. Don't mind if we do or don't. I would like to see Sean Jones though. He has a lot of talent & I think we could get him for a decent price. Not to mention he is a veteran who we don't have to wait for to develop.
eoin daly 4
I think we'll only go after one position through F/A and the other holes will be filled through the draft. That was pretty much the plan last year so hopefully it'll work again

The truth is, this is only our second season with both TD and Smitty at the helm leading the charge. One season doesn't really lend itself to show any signs of consistent trends or tendencies...You say that TD and Smitty don't appear to go after one dominate player and pay them; well, many would argue that that's exactly what they did last year with the signing of Michael Turner. A player at a position of need was identified, paid, and brought into the fold. What's there to assume they wouldn't do the same this offseason? The only thing I think that we could successfully guess right on and agree as far as offseason strategy, is that the defense WILL BE addressed...in what manner? No one but the staff knows... So I choose to just sit back and enjoy the ride and hope the magic touch repeats itself...

That was pretty much the plan last year so hopefully it'll work againwell i think wed be lucky to have another very "quality" signing like turner and i trust that dimitroff will find another relatively inexpensive guy to bring in like coleman to fill another hole.the guy i want more than anyone is vernon carey. he would be a very good RT for us and would provide depth at LT should baker get hurt. in a pinch he could slide over and we could kick clabo back out to RT. Falcons4life7 0
yea if we get haynesworth and Jamal cant do nothing bench him or release him...I mean John Ab.,Bab,Haynesworth, and JA98....come on Jamal....I would rather have Peppers and move Jamal inside with Peppers and Abraham pass rushing would free up the inside because of the double teams that they would attract

No one but the staff knows... So I choose to just sit back and enjoy the ride and hope the magic touch repeats itself...Turner didnt run away with the bank nor was he the highest paid RB in the league last year. Yes, he was paid a lot of money, but the Falcons were considering a number of situations with him. Mainly that they were going to have to rush him close to 400 times and that he would be the workhorse of the offense for most of the year. Ryan stepping up was really something that no one saw coming. I don't think that drafting a QB number one was out of character because you have to pick someone number one and a QB was our biggest concern last year. The difference between Turner and someone like Haynesworth is that an opposing offense can completely take one dominate defensive player out of the equation pretty easily. There are a whole series of offensive plays made to exploit a single strong defensive player (veers, power traps, draws) if you do not have talent around that player to make the whole defense formidable. If we go out and sign one player to the bulk of our cap we will have a hard time signing all of our draft picks and much more important that second or third free agent. If anyone thinks that having one monster on defense and a bunch of mediocre players works please show me a team that does that and wins, at least more than one or two years. I don't want to have one or two good years and then be horrible again. I got spoiled with the braves in the '90s. You need consistency and good support players on defense. On offense one guy can carry most of the load IF you have a good line. I just don't see us spending 10+ million on one guy on defense for a long contract. I could be wrong, but I think TD and Smith and more importantly Blank want to build a contender for years.

LVfalconfan 306
I always forget about Trey Lewis as well, If he is healthy I think he will be a solid rotational guy. If we signed Sean Jones, would we be able to afford Tank Johnson?
