US Mail Inquiry

I left my apartment about 3 weeks ago, and I'll be returning soon. Did I have to go the post office and make sure that they hold my mail? Would the delivery person, if my mailbox filled up, automatically hold my mail until I come back and say that my mail delivery can resume?

I have never left for a prolonged period of time where I've needed to halt mail delivery.

They will put a note on your mailbox if it fills up. It looks like one of those UPS missed package slips. You will be able to get your mail when you get back. If your mailman is like mine though, he will shove as much in that thing as possible though. He ruined 3 weeks worth of The Economist the last time I went on vacation.

Is your mailbox locked? If not, you definitely need to stop it. You don't need your mail sitting in your mailbox for 3 weeks. It's a good chance for mail to get stolen, and it's also pretty obvious that no one is home.

We didn't stop ours when we went out of town for two weeks (we both thought the other did it), and when we got back, we had a tub of mail sitting at our front door.
