I was as hurt by today's loss as anyone but this season is FAR, SO FAR from being over. We're still in a GREAT position to earn a playoff spot. Here's why....

Assuming the Redskins drop this game to the Ravens..this is what the wild card standings will look like after tomorrow...

Carolina/Tampa Bay loser 9-4

Dallas 8-5

Atlanta 8-5

Philadelphia 7-5-1

Washington 7-6

New Orleans 7-6

Chicago 7-6

OK..the Falcons are obviously going to beat St. Louis at home in Week 17. So all we'll need to do is win against either Tampa Bay next week or Minnesota the week after. Why?

Dallas finishes the season with New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. They would have to win 2 out of 3 of those games to even force a tiebreaker. They may or may not win the tiebreaker based on who they beat.

Philadelphia would have to win out to beat us. They finish with Cleveland, Washington, and Dallas.

Washington would have to win out to tie. They finish with Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

New Orleans would have to win out to tie. They finish with Chicago, Detroit, and Carolina.

Chicago can't pass us even if they win out in this scenario based on our head-to-head win against them. 11 seconds baby ;)

So of course winning out would be the best thing for us. We made need to win out to take the division but hey, wild cards have had success in the playoffs lately. Right now we just need to be worried about getting in. So please stop pressing the panic button because we lost today. I still think a playoff spot is VERY much ours for the taking. Technically we don't control our own destiny but it would take a miracle for us not to make it if we win out. But it's unlikely IMO that we won't get in even with 2 out of 3. Stay calm everyone. Rock the Dome next Sunday and let's punch our ticket.

If the Falcons finish 10-6, they have about a 35% chance of making it in. I'm working on a spreadsheet where you plug in the odds of any given matchup to find the odds of a making it in at 10-6. They have a better chance than most, but it's like poker--just because AA is a favorite against any one hand, that doesn't mean it's a favorite against the table--too many things could go wrong. Let's hope we win on Sunday and completely change the math.

We are 1/2 game behind Dallas due to the NFC Conference records. Dallas has only one conference game left (I think) and we have three.

No use in crying over spilled milk from our loss to the Saints. Winning answers all questions . Yesterday we had control of our destiny but today we don't. Just Win Baby and let the chips fall where they may. It's been a great season for Falcon fans. Still, champions are made in November and December in the NFL, staying injury free (which we ain't) and having your backs against the wall (which we do) test the meddle of a team. Maybe we're ready....maybe we aren't, but the future looks bright for our Falcons. We've exceeded expectations this year and raised them for the future. Falcons fly high and fast and we still can swoop down and nail the final playoff spot if we don't fold under the pressure. Like I said, the future's so bright ....I gotta wear shades.

GO FALCONS B)
