Okay, so after reading J Mikes article and seeing the responses - I went to the Gameday page on NFL and pulled the NFC South's scores by Quarter - By Week - here are the results:

The asterisk (*) represents the best quarter scoring in the division

Atlanta

1st = 94 *

2nd = 82

3rd = 26

4th = 96 *

Carolina

1st = 34

2nd = 101

3rd = 78

4th = 72

New Orleans

1st = 46

2nd = 114 *

3rd = 94 *

4th = 83

Tampa

1st = 54

2nd = 92

3rd = 51

4th = 66

O/T= 3 *

Well, that's a shocker!

Our 3rd quarter performance is pathetic. <_<

But, we lead the league in 4th quarter scoring. We also lead the division in 1st quarter scoring - but I don't know the comparison to the league.

You must be a cup half empty kind of guy - those are pretty impressive stats and you point out the bad :P

I'll tell you what's up. We've had the lead in most of the games going into the 3rd and we start pounding the ball, running time out and playing bend but don't break defense. Then the offense starts coming back on the other team and we have to start scoring again.

That's it in a nutshell - go back and watch the games. Recently, however, our defense is getting better at holding them in the 3rd.

We are always trying to run out clock in the third quarter. The team that controls the third quarter controls the game.

It would be interesting to see how many run plays we have run in the third quarter as opposed to in the rest of the quarters. I think it'd be quite a bit more.

Bingo - see my post above - this is exactly what I said.

Yeah I know we run the ball alot in the 3rd quarter but we don't seem to get many yards doing that.

We just play clock control in the 3rd - so we don't score a lot. Even when we are not successful - we keep running - which leads to a punt. I wouldn't be surprised if our punting numbers are up in the 3rd quarter either.

Here's the reason why we score only 26 points in 3rd and lead the league in 96 points in 4th Quarter.

3rd Quarter, We come out, Run the ball, control the clock, and wear down our opponent's Defense.

Then on 4th Quarter, all we have to do is letting Ryan throw the football or creating holes for Turner and Norwood to blow out their defense.

Very nice strategy by Coach Smith.

I'm all in for us to do the same thing this sunday :lol:

Thoughts-

We've gotten the ball to start the first quarter A LOT more than to start the third quarter.

We do play keep away with the running game once we get a lead.

Those are the two most important quarters to dominate. The first allows you to play with a lead. The fourth is where the game is decided.

I would love to see the point differential for each quarter.

I don't know what's wrong with us in the 3rd quarter on the defensive side. Like many have said, the offense in the 3rd qtr switches to our run down the clock offense, which is a heavy dose of the Burner. So, why don't we unleash the defense and play with the same aggression that limit teams from scoring in the 1st half? If we did this, everyone would respect our defense more and it would reflect in our record as well.

Actually, we have been better at this. When I was adding these numbers up - I went from the last game backwards down to game 1. I noticed a huge difference in 2nd and 3rd quarter scoring AGAINST us over the past few weeks. They are definitely improving in this area.

First in the league in first quarter scoring and least points allowed.

First in the league in first quarter scoring and least points allowed.

So we lead the league in first quarter and last quarter scoring and lead the league in least points allowed in first quarter.

Are you kidding - that is phenominal. This team does not get the respect they deserve.

All they will say is - yeah but you played Detroit. Well - guess what - so did a lot of other teams.
