NEW YORK (AP) -- Who says cartoons are for kids? "Family Guy" and "American Dad" creator Seth MacFarlane tops Entertainment Weekly's list of the 25 smartest people in television.

The magazine says "Family Guy" DVDs and merchandise have earned a reported $1 billion. MacFarlane is the highest-paid writer on TV, with a "Family Guy" spinoff called "The Cleveland Show" in the works.

Says Entertainment Weekly: "That frat-boy persona is only a cover."

I never would of guessed its earned a billion off everything

Seth is just the creator of Family Guy, right?

Is he also a writer?

Either way he doesnt deserve all these accolades. He created the show, and the characters in the show. But the characters arent all that great. He didn't create a Daffy Duck or Homer Simpson type of revolutionary cartoon character. The strength of his shows is not in the characters at all, but in the pop culture references. And that is a credit to the writers, not to the creator.

He only writes some of the shows but not all and he does some of the animation and the voices for most the main male characters, Peter, Stewie, Brian, Quaqmire and Tom Tucker

Inventors make money off of patents, right? And then people come along and patent a better "wheel" and they make money too, right?

Pay the man. FG is funny as ****! And if he's doing that many of the voice overs on the show, then that's 5 salaries right there. I got no problem with it. I like South Park, too, but it's more "toilet humour"-ish. IMO, easier to do.

Toilet humorish? South Park has farrrrrrrrr more satire than Family Guy will ever have.

Lois Griffin: You should spend some time with our kids, Peter. And with me.

Peter Griffin: Uh, what could me and you do together?

[Lois giggles]

Peter Griffin: Lois. You've got a sick mind.

Lois Griffin: Peter, I'm talking about making love.

Peter Griffin: Oh. I thought you wanted us to murder the children and harvest their organs for beer money.
