Our special teams is not as appreciated as it should be...

Check out these stats.

As far as opponents punt returns... The Falcs are 1st in the league as our opponents average a measly 2.2 yards per return. That is astounding!!!

OPP Yards per Punt Return:

1. Falcons - 2.2 ypr.

2. Giants - 3.9 ypr.

3. Pittsburgh - 4.5 ypr.

4. Chicago - 6.7 ypr.

5. Baltimore - 6.9 ypr.

Thats awesome and may be directly related to the fact that the Falcons have had the SECOND LEAST amount of punts returned in the NFL. Only the Patriots have punted less times, at 9. The Falcons have had 12 punts returned. This is a testament to how ridiculous Koenan is.

Times punts were returned:

1. Patriots - 9

2. Falcons - 12

3. Giants - 14

4. Houston - 15

Buffalo - 15

I wish I knew of a way to check the stats on our punt returns through a certain number of weeks, but those has been great since we got rid of garbage-man Adam Jennings.

We are up to 16th in the NFL in Punt return yardage and I bet that before HD took over we were nowhere near the middle of the pack.

All in all, our Special Teams unit needs to be applauded for their hard work. Those guys are consistantly doing a **** of a job on coverage and that speaks volumes of how well our coaching staff has done.

Nicholas, Snelling, Irons... they've all been huge.

EDIT: One of these replies made me look it up and wow...

The Falcons are tied for THIRD in the NFL in the amount of times our opponents have Punted...

Punts by opponents:

1. Philadelphia - 43

2. Tampa Bay - 39

3. Atlanta - 34

Oakland - 34

Carolina - 34

I can answer your question regarding the punt returns. Adam Jennings had 23 returns for 151 yards, 6.6 avg. Finneran had 1 return for 2 yards. Harry Douglas has returned 10 punts for 180 yards, 18 yards per return. Our team average was 6.6 in our first 7 games and 16.65 in our last 5 games.

The Saints have the best team average at 16.7.

^^^^^ We are now also one of the best punt RETURN units in the league... assuming this trend continues.

Wow yeah our ST are the ****. A lot of props goes out to Koenen. I wonder how much average hangtime he gets and where it is in comparison to other punters.

And no way we have punted only 12 times. I know we have punted a lot less then we usually do, but really? 12? We make teams punt 4-5 times a game.

Koenen does a great job punting the ball ... he traded distance (he punted further in the first seasons) for hangtime, now our coverage unit really has a chance to outrun the ball. Also I think he does a great job nailing opponents inside the 20 (or in his case more 10).

12 is a number that comes up in our punting game, but we've punted 44 times this season, but only 12 times the other team choose to return it. We only gave up a total of 26 punt return yards, which is far better than anyone else in the league. (2nd are the Giants with 54, 3rd the Pats with 119)

The Patriots have probably punted more than 9 times then. In any event, that is still the best in the league. I'll update the post. :-D

Actually, the Pats only punted 37 times.

NFL.com has them at 37 punts, 9 times returned for a total of 119 yards ... the Giants are at 44 punts, 14 returns for a total of 56y ... and we 44 punts, 12 returns for a total of 26y.

These are sick numbers for us and also the Giants, if you look at the other teams.

BTW: We get to play the worst team when it comes to punt coverage ... Vikings: 62 punts, 34 returns for a total of 564y ... and 4 TDs

if u look at these teams in the top of this list, they also are tops in DEF. the two go hand-in-hand, and ATL's DEF is much improved even since week 1 this year.

our running game is keeping our DEF fresh and koenen is worth every cent we pay him. to be pro bowl calibre punter but to couple that as a kick-off specialist is hard to come by.

I was talking with another Falcon fan the other day and I said, "While I think Turner, Ryan, and Roddy are MVP picks, it's really hard to single them out as there are so many standouts on both sides of the ball and on special teams." It's really a great overall team effort going on here, they're really gelling.

I would really love to see us reach agreement on an extension with Koenen before he becomes a FA at the end of this year.

He's been a **** of a weapon for us when it comes to field position.

QFT

He's probally one of the most under valued weapons we have on our team.

Special teams is stout. Nicholas and Harris are all over the ball. It seems like when I come home and watch the home games I recorded...Harris's #41 is always in the camera. He is one of the first players to congratulate a good play when players return to the sideline.

I really have taken a liking to Harris this year. I started to take a liking to Nicholas after seeing him last year

Looking at all of the special teams categories as a whole...

I think it's pretty safe to say that as a team we are almost far and away the best unit in football.

That is remarkable.

We have the best punt returner statistically...

We have the best punt coverage statistically...

We have a deadly returner...

We have one of the best punters in the league...

We have one of the best kickers in the HISTORY of the league...

There really isn't much more to be said.
