Recap of the Charger Game

OK, let me preface by saying I tailgated with a number of Charger fans yesterday. Most stated how impressed they were with Ryan and how much they missed Turner.

Now, on to the game.

During the Chargers first drive, I had this sinking feeling we were going to have some trouble stopping them. They marched down the field. The screen play was killing us. They were getting a minimum of about 8 yards every time they ran it. Thank God, after that drive, Norv didn't run it again for the rest of the game. Going for it on 4th down was the wrong move for the Chargers. That gave us a burst and took the wind out of the sails of the Chargers AND the fans. It was nice to see us make them pay by putting 3 points on the board. Had Matty not overthrown Jenkins, we would have been up by 7. Jenkins was wiiiiiiiide open.

I'm very impressed with Douglas but that was a bonehead play on the muffed punt. I'm sure the coaching staff has told him to let those go in the future. That play in essence gave the Chargers 7 points. He made up for it though with a really nice return later on and a few nice catches where he was drilled immediately.

Roddy White. I'm wondering how bad his back is hurting him. He made some nice catches (especially the deep one) and the guy is all guts but that drop in the endzone is a ball he normally catches.

The defense. Good god. That was a stellar performance. The only reason the Bolts scored was due to a fumble return and 25 yard field early in the game. Our D SHUT DOWN the QB with the most TD's and the best passer rating. Not to mention handcuffing future hall of famer LT to 24 yards rushing. NICE.

Mike Smith declining the penalty and making the Chargers rekick was a bad move against a desperate team. I forgive him because we won. I also was wondering why we continued to run in the second half when we were getting stuffed over and over and going three and out against the worst pass D in the league and then I realized that this is smash mouth football and we were trying to impose our will, run the clock, and preserve our lead.

Matty Ice played solid and did not throw a pick. I'm pretty sure he's thrown a pick in almost every road game this year. It was nice to see a change.

Things I saw in the stands you probably didn't see on TV. A guy in a Grimes jersey flew forward about two rows after being pushed by some thug from behind. The Falcon fan was escorted by security out and Charger fans cheered. I don't know what started it but arent we supposed to punish the guys who START fights. There were a TON of Falcon fans there. Also, with 11 minutes to go and down by 6, Charger fans were filing out and leaving the Q. That's not fan support. That's just god awful.

At any rate, it was nice to see us leave with a W. I sure wish Carolina and Tampa had lost.

There were a lot of Falcon fans there yesterday I was impressed... It was Falcon central at Oggi's Sports Bar before the game.. It was a welcomed sight.

One other thing I realized at the game yesterday is that I miss Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Outdoor football games are awesome. I've been to the dome many times and I love to watch my team but watching football outdoors is just great.

Coach Smith was talking to him as soon as he came off the field
