WINNIPEG - A 14-year-old girl teamed up with her grandmother to stab a guest 13 times after a fight broke out at a Winnipeg drinking party, police said.

The incident took place at 4 a.m. local time Sunday at a home in the city's north end.

The victim, an 18-year-old girl who didn't know her attackers before the party, was taken to hospital in unstable condition, but was later upgraded to stable and released.

Police said they have charged a 52-year-old woman and the teen girl each with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.

According to justice sources, the girl and the victim began arguing, which escalated after the victim punched the girl in the head.

In response, the justice sources said, the girl went to a drawer in the home's kitchen, withdrew a steak knife with a 10-centimetre blade, and used it stab her victim three times in the upper body.

Soon after, the girl's grandmother allegedly joined in the fray, producing a different knife to stab the victim 10 times in the lower body.

Police arrested the 14-year-old, who said in a videotaped statement she was "very angry" and that "she made a mistake." She didn't deny her involvement, police said.

"It's pretty frightening that a 14-year-old girl would react that way," said Const. Pat Chabidon.

Police dismissed notions the girl may have been acting in self-defence, or that her grandmother was simply trying to protect her.

"Jumping in and stabbing someone when they're already being stabbed? That goes beyond protective in any way," Chabidon said.
