Tech fans may not embrace “whiteout”

Despite request from athletics department to wear white some fans are saying no

The request isn’t difficult to fulfill — wear white to the game.

But plenty of Georgia Tech fans say they will resist the “Whiteout” for Tech’s game against Miami tonight at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Some fans say they won’t wear white, despite the fact that their school is asking them to, and it’s one of Tech’s official colors, along with gold.

“Absolutely, which baffles me,” said David Pritchett, a Tech alum and season-ticket holder for more than 10 years. “What are they trying to prove?”

Some fans estimate that as few as 50 percent of the 49,000 will comply, which would color the whiteout a failure.

Tony Yetman of Kennesaw will wear his gold Tech sweatshirt, and he said most of the Tech fans he knows think wearing white is “just a silly thing to do.”

“We’ll appeal to our fans and we’ll see how they support it,” associate athletics director Wayne Hogan said.

The players are for it, at least, and will wear their traditional home whites.

“I think it’s a cool idea,” defensive tackle Vance Walker said. “I think it will be good for national television, good exposure for recruits and just for the school in general.”

A little background: The idea for a whiteout came from the student body last year, Hogan said.

“The students were pretty adamant that they wanted to try one,” he said. “That was the real roots of the idea.”

The athletics department had initially pegged the Mississippi State game in September for the whiteout, but pushed it back to give students more time to organize.

Tonight’s game was chosen because ESPN’s cameras will be trained on Bobby Dodd Stadium, giving the Jackets and their white-clad fans broad exposure.

“I still hope that people do it because I want us to look good on TV in front of a national audience,” said Cherian Jacobs, a Tech senior.

Still, since the athletics department put out word of the whiteout about two weeks ago, some Tech alumni have found assorted reasons to fight white:

• Those who don’t own white Tech gear don’t want to buy something just to wear to one game.

• It will be too cold to wear just a sweatshirt, a problem for those who don’t own white jackets. Temperatures are expected to be in the 30s by the end of the game.

• They say it’s gimmicky and, if Tech loses, the school will look foolish.

• They don’t want to appear as if they’re copying Georgia, which has had three blackouts since last year.

Said Yetman, “I view it as being a stunt that, candidly, I would have thought our school was above, especially after you saw the way the most recent blackout worked in Athens.”

Yetman referred to the Bulldogs’ loss to Alabama earlier this season.

Saying that whiteout supporters are infuriated by those who won’t wear white may be a stretch, but not by much. Tech alum Daniel Fogal of Tucker said he will wear a white sweatshirt and a white hat and said he’d wear white jeans if his wife would let him. He’s taking a friend, but only on the condition that he wear white, too. And Fogal doesn’t even care that much about the idea.

“It’s unfortunate that our fans can’t just jump on board,” he said.

Those who will wear white see it simply as a way to support the students and the team.

“My whole take on it was, the school has done what we’ve asked them to do, which is get a new coach and spend more money on certain things,” Pritchett said. “They come and ask us to do something as simple as support your team. It’s what the student body wants to do. Whether or not they want to wear white or not, it’s the right thing to do, instead of complaining about it.”

If it doesn’t work, he has another idea.

“I was telling one of my friends that if we wanted to do something original, we should have a geekout and have a football game at the library,” Pritchett said, “because that’s where everyone is, anyway. It’d be a guaranteed sellout.”

I dont get some people.. Whiteout is good for pub, and school image. There are lots of older alumnists who are real A-holes. Trust me on that one.

it's a great thing for the recruits as well.. and the atmosphere for those events are more energized and even if gt loses the atmosphere will still rock and most recruits aren't swayed by losing a game like that..

I'm going to the game but I'm not wearing white. I'm not a Tech fan. I'm not a Miami fan either.

i am a uga fan and I had planned to go, but i can't due to having to do a system migration, but I would wear white to support tech because it would be a great thing for the team and to show support to the seniors and make a great atmosphere for the recruits.. i have been to a blackout and it was the best atmosphere I have ever been to at a game.. it's really awesome..

Before trying to accomplish what Penn State (and UGA on a local level a couple times) has been doing for several years now, I think Tech should focus on trying to sell out a home game with their fans first before attempting to move to the next level.

Penn State's whiteouts look awesome at night.

penn state did their white out on the national stage..thats what every team basically tries to do when the spotlight is on that game and that game only..i agree though, penn state is the only team that can pull that white out and actually look good in it because those are the school colors..all white is not georgia techs school color..

Forget all those whining little baby pseudo-Tech fans.

It's a simple request!!! WEAR WHITE!!! This kind of whining is more embarrassing for the school, team, and fanbase than if we lost the game. If we lost and the stadium was completely Whited-out, people would forget about it. It will take longer for people, especially Gaggers, to forget all the poor Tech fans not being willing to buy a $4 white tee and pull it on over their jacket. Who cares what it looks like?

I am a broke Grad student in Tennessee and I spent $35 on a white GT hoodie so that I could drive down to support my team. Good grief this ticks me off...

WEAR WHITE, dadgummit!!!

Sac, I am a UGA fan/alumnus/season ticket holder and have been to all of the blackouts the last couple years. The Auburn BLACKOUT had the best atmosphere compared to the other ones. However, I'm still not wearing white to the game tonight. Like one poster said, Tech needs to worry about selling out the stadium first. I have nothing against Tech, but I think only maybe 50% of the GT fans will be wearing white but I hope they prove me wrong. Not to mention, I dont even have a white jacket and I'm certainly not going to buy one for a Tech game. Tech's Thursday night games are always fun to go to and I hope its a good game tonight.

You got that right, buddy.

I'm sick of this crap from Tech fans... and they wonder why we get so much grief from the AJC and UGA fans. This isn't just an issue of playing mediocre football for the last 7 years.

no one wants to be like uga...i support people who dont want to wear white..if anything, we need to wear gold or yellow gold...thats the reason the school mascot is a YELLOW JACKET..

The School colors are White and Gold, see the fight song. The Players are requesting us to wear white. Is it asking to much for your support. These guys have busted their rear ends to represent "your" school and they are asking for you to participate. You are the reason we can not get to that next level. The we are too good for that bunch that makes excuses as opposed to just doing what is asked in order to show unity and passion for the team. I will be there in all white...It is not beneath me and I am a YELLOW JACKET. .

I agree, the fans should make a more conserted effort to wear white. Its not just some silly uniform gimic. The players can really feed of the energy from the fans and Tech is going to need to be REALLY fired up if they are going to take out a hot miami team. Its not hard just wear white, no one is asking you to go out there and make a tackle. <_< I'll be rooting for ya tonight Jackets make your state proud. :)

This is such a stupid thing to get worked up over! Just because you don't want to wear white doesn't mean you don't support the team! You're there, screaming your head off, aren't you? This gimmicky, copy-cat crap needs to stop. Quit complaining about what people wear to the games! Anyone who thinks this is important is taking this way too seriously!

The problem is that everyone is trying to get excited about the whiteout and we have poor fans complaining about it. Those who support aren't the ones that started this mess. Go to any GT message board and you will read a bunch of people whining about copy-catting and gimmicks. WHO CARES? The students and the TEAM wanted to do a WHITEOUT so everyone needs to shut up and wear white. This isn't about us... it's about the team. Screaming your head off or not, if there is a scheduled whiteout, greenout, purpleout, whatever... just wear the color!!!

Hey Wreck! I was there in all white and loved the Message from the three Tech Astronauts at the end of the third quarter. What a night brother and I could not be more proud of the Jackets. Now let's hope we aren't too banged up and can get 100% healthy for next Saturday.

Give 'em **** Tech!

I was there in Section 206 decked out in my white. What an awesome experience last night. I woke up with the biggest smile on my face!

Dwyer will be ready to go and you better believe Nesbitt will be running this thing. Also, look to have some faces back next week.

Go Jackets.... THWG!!!!!!!!!

it was actually the students that suggested having a white out. the problem comes, i would think in it being later in the season and colder and less fans having white jackets or hoodies. earlier in the season i doubt it would have been much of an issue as almost everyone has white t-shirts.

the main thing is that our alumni didnt fully embrace the idea and as a result the two endzones were mostly white whereas the alumni sorta half-a**ed it for whatever reason.
