Moreno takes rushing lead

UGA notebook

Knowshon Moreno topped 100 yards rushing for the fifth time in the last six games against Auburn, making the Georgia tailback the Southeastern Conference's leading rusher.

If Moreno ends the season in that top spot, he will become the first Bulldog to lead the SEC in rushing since Garrison Hearst in 1992.

Moreno has 1,244 yards and 15 touchdowns on 210 carries.

"Really, he's a great runner, there's no just no two ways about it," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "Sometimes, borderline an amazing runner. He just makes some great runs."

The redshirt sophomore is averaging 113.1 yards per game, just ahead of Arkansas' Michael Smith, who averages 112.4 yards.

Moreno rushed for 131 yards on 22 carries against Auburn with 89 of the yards coming in the first quarter.

"He looked pretty good to me," Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said. "I was pretty tired of watching him after the first quarter. He was hard to tackle, just talking to our players. He was one of those guys who's got great instincts. He can be physical or he can spin on you, like he did us (Saturday). We had guys grasping for air."

Moreno also had four catches for 58 yards including his first receiving touchdown as a Bulldog on a 35-yard screen pass.

"He's dynamic," Tuberville said. "It's kind of the same thing when we had Carnell Williams. You put him in a blue jersey and you run him around and it would be hard to tell the difference between either of those two. They play about the same. They love football and they play hard every down whether blocking or catching or running the ball."

Moreno needs 91 yards rushing to move past Rodney Hampton into fourth place on the school's career list. Moreno is currently eighth in program history with 2,578 career yards.

Besides Hearst, Tim Worley in 1988 is the only other Georgia player to lead the SEC in rushing since Herschel Walker from 1980-82.

This and that

Green caught the game-winning touchdown catch for the second week in a row against Auburn, an 17-yard grab midway through the fourth quarter. ... One-time Georgia signee Jamar Chaney, a senior linebacker who sustained a season-ending leg injury in Mississippi State's season opener, will apply for a medical hardship and plans to return for another season, his coach Sylvester Croom said Monday.
