Angered by the Oakland Raiders' 2-6 start, team owner Al Davis asked his front office staff to explore the possibility of releasing several players, including cornerback DeAngelo Hall, according to multiple sources.

The Raiders are expected to release Hall on Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith.

Hall

The process started on Monday, a day after the Raiders' embarrassing 24-0 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Davis, looking ahead to rest of the season and to 2009, asked his staff to study a list of potential players who could be let go before the end of the week or after the season, sources said.

One source said the list included more than a dozen names. The Raiders' front-office staff studied the cap consequences of releasing high-priced veteran players. He also wanted his staff to see if other teams might claim any of these players on waivers.

The team was planning on making the move to release Hall on Tuesday before holding off, according to NFL.com. The Raiders have paid Hall $8 million for eight games, and also gave Atlanta a second-round pick for his services.

NFL.com reported the move to waive him now helps the Raiders avoid paying Hall $16 million worth of injury-guaranteed bonuses in his contract.

Hall has 48 tackles and three interceptions for the Raiders, including a season-high eight tackles last week against the Falcons.

Hall isn't the only Raider under consideration for release. Wide receiver Javon Walker received an $11 million signing bonus and a $1 million base salary this year, but he has only 13 catches in his first seven games with the Raiders. The other players on Davis' list are unknown.

At his Monday press conference, interim Raiders coach Tom Cable said he was thinking of making more changes in the starting lineup. Since taking over for Lane Kiffin, Cable has benched wide receiver Ronald Curry and safety Michael Huff. If Davis gets his way, some changes might be permanent.

I wonder if Michael Huff will also be gone. At some point the Falcons will have to address the Saftey position. Milloy isn't getting any younger so my thought is this: Atlanta need's to attempt to get Michael Huff-n-Puff from Da Raiders. Keep Milloy for another year and let him work with Huff. Al Davis isn't the brightest owner so maybe we can float a 3rd or 4th round pick for him.

This might be the smartest thing Davis has done in years!!!

Think he will say they are rebuilding now.

I would actually like to get Huff...We all know Raiderville is a career killer.. see Randy Moss. I would like to see what Huff could bring to the table here..it couldnt hurt.

Although I do agree with you, Moss' trip and torture in Raiderville, and his lack of production, was all his own doing...

You see how easily he turned it back on once he got to New England...

Moss could've bum-rushed every one of Rice's records if he had Rice's work ethic...

Yeah Moss is a headcase...he could have done a WHOLE lot better than he did in Oakland. I think Huff would excel here though. I was hoping we got him when he came out.

I think TD should go after Michael Huff hard if he becomes available. When Huff came out of college and during his first year with the Raiders he was a SS and we could switch him back to that from FS, which is what he played with the Raiders this year could groom him to be Milloy's replacement. Although I like Decoud, I think that Huff would be easier to implement into the line-up if Milloy goes down or retires sooner than we thought and Huff could add depth to our secondary right now in nickel and dime situatuions.

Today is the day Al took a step in the right direction... Purge that roster and start over from the beginning.. I wish it wouldn't have taken him this long to get it for Jamarcus sake.

agreed......basically Al Davis and the Raiders are trying to "undo" all the stupid moves they have made in last 3 seasons......

1) - Release the overpaid/underperforming/malcontent - DeAngelo Hall

2) - Release the tremendously overpaid/underperforming/constantly injured - Javon Walker

3) - Release the very disappointing "top 7" pick - Michael Huff.........just think, the Raiders could have selected Jay Cutler that year and they would have avoided another "bust" in Jamarcus Russell.......

If they release Huff, I would be all in for signing the guy. He's a big hitter and a ball hawk. He can play CB as well as SS, and he would be perfect for the Cover 2 D IMO.

I know Michael Huff was highly regarded coming out of Texas - but what has he really done to distinguish himself in the pros? I have no idea but from my recollection Michael Huff has not done much........somebody please feel free to give us the stats and/or the pro scouting report of Michael Huff....

I beleive that Michael Huff can be a good FS......... He needs a new start..... His confidence is shot in Oakland......

The guy has the tools and skills........ A team with a decent pass rush will make Michael Huff look super good.........In Oakland the lack off pass rushers give opponents all day to find a open guy..... Heck......Gibril Wilson has been getting beat also

Michael Huff and Jimmy Williams were considered to 2 Top Safeties in that draft.

Lol. That turned out brilliant.
