Florida cornerback Jacques Rickerson has been kicked off the team following his arrest on a felony battery charge.

The 20-year-old sophomore from St. Augustine was being held in the Alachua County jail Tuesday. Gainesville police say Rickerson slapped his girlfriend on the face, choked her, then covered her face with a pillow. Authorities say the altercation started when she asked him to leave her apartment and Rickerson got upset.

The woman reportedly had visible injuries on her arm, neck and upper chest.

Rickerson played in all eight games this season, recording 10 tackles and an interception.

Coach Urban Meyer said in a statement: "Jacques Rickerson is no longer part of our team - that is not what our program is about."

I think thats a very bad thing to do and that he received appropriate punishment. However, I always wonder, this is not the first time we have seen a football player get kicked off the team for some really bad behavior. So dont they know what the consequences are? You have to believe that they go through special orientations when they enroll at a major athletic program that you will be under constant scrutiny and that you need to think any thing that you do through before doing it? Sometimes it just baffles me.
