Chiefs are a joke right now

By JASON WHITLOCK

The Kansas City Star

Now what?

The Chiefs lost their fragile and fraudulent quarterback of the future, exposing the irresponsibility of opening the season with a quarterback depth chart Rockhurst High’s Tony Severino would find objectionable.

Now what?

Today, the Chiefs will likely deal with the ramifications of their unrepentant malcontent/running back's latest brush with the law and a woman. I'm sure Larry Johnson spent part of Sunday palling around with friends, laughing at KC's pathetic Johnson-less offense and contemplating what action NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will take against him.

Now what? Where do the Chiefs go from here? How do they define themselves and move forward after Tennessee blanked them for three quarters, embarrassed them for four and routed them 34-10 at Arrowhead Stadium?

There were no answers inside Kansas City’s locker room. There were plenty of stunned, silent looks and quick exits. You can’t blame them. There were few relevant, probing questions to be asked.

All the answers had been provided during three hours on the field.

Coming off a bye week filled with drama, acrimony, Brodie Croyle-inspired optimism and a get-tough deactivation of Johnson, Herm Edwards and his coaching staff bombed in a way that makes their employment here next season indefensible.

By declining to draft or acquire a quarterback to compete against Brittle Croyle and elevating clock-management specialist **** “Father Time” Curl to oversee the most important position on any football team, Edwards tethered himself to Croyle.

When Croyle limped off the field with a season-(career)-ending knee injury early in the second quarter, Herm might as well have grabbed a pair of crutches and retired to the locker room with his Arena League QB of the future.

It’s over — the Croyle experiment, the Herm-driven rebuilding process and the Peterson-approved redistribution of Hunt family wealth. All good and bad things end, and the Titans literally ran over (332 yards on the ground) the remains of the Peterson era.

What we’ve witnessed this season in general — and the last two weeks in particular — is unacceptable and unprofessional. In its five losses, Kansas City’s opponents outscored Herm’s boys 147-42. The Chiefs’ lone victory — a 33-19 romp over the Broncos — was such an obvious fluke that it revealed nothing about the rebuilding effort.

The Chiefs are a joke right now. They have as little credibility as the Royals. The ownership is timid at a time when boldness is required. This is not a call to fire Peterson or Edwards today. It’s a call that Clark Hunt acknowledge that no progress is being made.

After Sunday’s performance, I’ll vouch for the professionalism and skill of one player on the roster. Tony Gonzalez is a winning player. Every other player is a mystery.

Kansas City’s offensive line is so inept that it is difficult for me to discern whether Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters is effective. I know that Rudy Niswanger, Adrian Jones and Damion McIntosh are not players a team can win consistently with in the starting lineup.

Also, I know that first-round pick Glenn Dorsey has been a bust through six games. I’ve watched film, and his footwork is horrid. He catches on run plays and tries to win a bench-press contest. An NFL lineman wins or loses the battle with his first step. Dorsey’s first step is slow and often misdirected. He hasn’t mastered the explosive, violent, 6-inch control step. I’ve seen Dorsey drop his foot back. I’ve seen him step the wrong direction.

its early but im SOOOOOO glad we picked ryan. could you imagine what it would be like knowing we passed on a franchise qb??? ugh, i would've felt so sick.

Boss,

By now there is No doubt that the Atlanta Falcons won the April Draft past.

Jake Long is no barn burner, I like Sam Baker much better. I have not seen Jake Long's name published anywhere

Chris Long and the Lambs have done very little, I have not seen Chris Long's name published anywhere.

Matt Ryan, Good Gawd! Lord Have Mercy, we have THE MAN in Atlanta, no doubt.

Glenn Dorsey, good for a series or two but Dorsey seems to not be in NFL Shape yet. Dorsey did little vs the Falcons and has done no more vs anybody else.

We also won the 2007 Free Agency with Mr Michael Turner, best RB in the NFL

Yea but he wasn't a free agent was he? Turner was the best free agent and has not dissapointed. Your comparing Turner to Portis this year when Portis just happens to be having his best NFL season. He doesn't play like this every year. If you go by just this year then Tomlinson sucks I guess, right? Wrong. Portis is very good but doesn't mean he's better.

What??? If anything they are showing Indians to be warriors. That's how I would want to be represented. What about the Patriots? Are they racist too? Just wondering.

Really? You don't find Redskin racist?

It has long been seen as a derogatory term.

The word Patriot has not, ever.

PS they were also the last team to integrate....

I respect your arguement but I just don't see it as racist. And they did integrate right? This entire country went through intergration it just took a little longer for some to come around. The important thing is that they did come around. A lot of sports teams at all levels went through this and it was some sad disgraceful times but we as Americans need to move past what happened and keep moving forward. I do see your arguement but this is football and there is no reason to discriminate against a fan of another team. At least for these reasons. By the way, Vote Obama for change. Just had to get that out there.lol.

I wouldn't go that far...

Portis is quite a talent and I hope he continues to perform as well as he has, especially since he's on several of my fantasy teams...

But it's no coincidence that both Portis and Campbell are having very successful years. The one thing they have in common is Washington's offensive line. Santana Moss hasn't been a slouch on the stat sheets either (he's on my fantasy team too) and all 3 of those player's production is based off that offensive line, so I wouldn't be so quick to anoint Portis the best RB in the NFL, although he's certainly in the discussion...

Also keep in mind that when San Diego's and Minnesota's offensive lines were on top of their games last year, the discussion on the best RB in the league was narrowed to Tomlinson and Peterson. No mention of Portis last year. Do you suppose he got that much better in one offseason?

I suspect not...

Back on topic.. Jason Whitlock is a pompous jerk, T.Moore actually resembles a newspaper writer when compared against Whitlock.

I'd agree it's too early to determine that Dorsey is a bust, 6 games isn't a lot of time to get your feet wet in the NFL, but I'm really glad we picked Ryan.

Yeah, I cannot believe you guys wanted Dorsey - unimaginable! B)

ok about 80% of the board wanted Dorsey - we were wrong - so what? what should happen to us? firing squad? electric chair? what do you propose?

As being part of the 20% (I wanted Long but he went to Miami) - I propose that we all just bury the hatchet and move on -- Just don't flinch when I bury it - it won't hurt too much then :P

J/K!
