Role expanding for Falcons WR Douglas

By Dan Parr

Oct. 16, 2008

Sources in Atlanta don’t expect the Falcons to change a whole lot during their bye week. Things are going far better than anyone expected and there’s not much of a need to tweak lineups on offense and defense. However, there could be a change made on punt returns, the way we hear it. Adam Jennings has handled the duties thus far, but he’s gaining just 6.8 yards per return, which left the Falcons ranked 25th in the league as they headed into their bye week. Jennings also has muffed two returns, which is tied for a league high. Word is rookie WR Harry Douglas will get more looks at the position and he’s being groomed to eventually take over full time. Douglas has made his mark as a receiver and ballcarrier on reverse plays this season, but scouts envisioned him as a punt returner, as well, when he left Louisville.

With Laurent Robinson back healthy....... We can try HD at Punt Return

God, I hope so. He can't do any worse than Jennings has done.

For an NFL returner, I sure do spend a lot of time thinking, "Please don't drop it, please don't drop it, please don't drop it" when Jennings hits the field. Not to mention he spends more time running backwards than gaining positive yardage.

And he has got to have the most fair catches in NFL history to start a career.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice that. There was a game this year, I wanna say against the Chiefs where he can backwards and got tackled for an 11 yard loss.

HD is our best option right now......If Thomas Brown hadn't gotten injured I feel pretty sure that he would be returning punts....and doing a good job at it too.

the staff is smart. they wont cut jennings unless douglas really excells. they may not even then in case of injury, unless a player at another position is available or needed. trey lewis is said to be shelved for the rest of the year and i'm glad to hear it. he may be our UT next to jackson next year. i want to see him come back next year 100%.

Direwolf, can you help me understand something?

Jennings was a 6th round pick in 2006, he didnt return one punt his rookie season and only returned 7 kicks total. He gets lots of time in his second year returning 47 kicks total and has still been aweful. Why is it okay to give up on him? a guy who has only had a year and a half of real playing time?

I think if we can give up on Jennings, then I can give up on jamaal without scruitiny.

One word: PLEASE!

Agreed! I also would rather see Grady then Jennings in the punt return spot. Im pretty sick and tired of worring during punt returns. And I hope we beat the eagles... A win against the eagles would really improve our rating in the NFL. The latest ratings of teams by nfl.com puts the Falcons at the number 10 spot. Not to bad since we were supposed to have a miserable season. Lets win the division fellas... GO FALCONS!!!
