Offseason question

I'm just trying to get a better understanding of what happens when he gets released in this next off-season and most likely reinstated, how it affects our cap. I really don't know much about how the contract situation will work, but im pretty sure unless the NFL allows us to cut him without a huge cap penalty, we might have some issues. I'm almost positive no team will trade for him and take on his huge salary (on top of giving up any compensation). Obviously we aren't going to let him suit up or even let him step foot in the dome on game day, but this is an issue no team has ever faced.

Even if we found a team interested, it would be strictly a conditional pick (like the Pacman thing), which i dont think were really worried about. I think the big concern is how we resolve our cap for this. If no team is willing to trade for him because of his salary and we can't just cut him without a huge cap hit, what happens?

*** does anyone know our exact cap status for this offseason?

cool down, no need to fight in here.

Once he's reinstated, he'll get cut. If that happens next year, we will have the rest of his bonus money running against our cap (like this year) and that's it. If it happens in 2010, we'll cut him and nothing will run against our cap, since all bonus money will be "paid" (actually he got it already, it just runs against the cap over some years ... otherwise we would've taken a 30 mil hit when he signed the contract) by then.

These is no way in **** that Vick is getting cut by this team. Despite what many posters for some reason think, there will be teams willing to trade for Vick and give us a boost in the draft. Raiders, Cowboys, someone will want him and give us a pick or two. He may not play QB for them but they will take him and see what they can turn him into.

yeah i dont know why people want to cut Vick? I know we can get someting besides a freaking 4th. Thats crazy. I just hope we send him to the AFC. i only want to face Vick in the superbowl.

I think Vick should give us a 1st round pick, IMHO.

Unfortunately, in the REAL world, there is no way anyone is giving a second, much less a first, for him in a trade./

Don't be a ******. You just can't put someone on the IR and why would you have a player suitup that dosent play. If vick would play WR and play for a respectable amount of money someone will trade for him. No one is going to give a 1st or 2nd round draft pick for him (well maybe Oakland or Dallas). Vick would be way to much of a distraction on this team to ever play for it again. Plus, Blank is not a fool. Vick lied to him and cost him millions of dollars, no hundreds of millions of dollars if you think about it. Do you think any business person would let one of there employees make them lose hundreds of millions of dollars while lying to them and still employee them.

He made Blank money. Please explain how MV cost Blank hundreds of millions....?? So far Blank is out of the signing bonus money.... <_<

He filled the Dome for 3 or 4 years. Have you forgotten. Do you know what a coke and a slice of pizza cost at the dome. Get over yourself with the "hundreds of millions." I agree, he won't be back here. We still need to wait on Goddell's decision. When he has served his debt to society....there will be teams there.....

I repeat. I the real world, noone is liekly to give a first or a second, probably not a thrid for an inconsistant quarterback with atitude problems who just spent a few years in jail and served a suspension. Unless its the cowboys or Raiders. And the COwboys have ROmo.

he will no longer be a "franchise" QB for anyone..he will be in his low 30's probably upon his return, and depending on if hes stayed in shape or not, hes nothing better than a #2 QB on anyones depth chart unless your depth chart includes JT o sullivan and whoever else..i see him going out west and them sending us a 2nd and a 4th rounder for him..i see it like this. if we cant get nothing for him, keep him as the #2 QB on our team. NOTICE I SAID #2..chris redman will be retired, and we will not have a legit 2nd QB if something happens to ryan..

The man will have been "rehabilitated." Look at the deal Adam Jones got with his issues with no "rehab."

I thought your question was relatively straightforward, but you can see the emotion around any Vick topic. Contract obligations have a lot to do with the flexibility of a team to manage its payroll and cap limits.

Vick signed a $130 million 10 year contract in 2005 that included $37 million in guaranteed money. Although there was some manipulating of the guaranteed money, it really has no impact on our current situation. Even though the the contract was for 10 years, the longest the NFL will allow bonuses [guaranteed money] to be spread out is 6 years. So, we have been charged $6+ million per year against the cap each year and this will continue until 2010.

If he was cut, traded, or off the team in any other manner, all of the remaining allocated money would count against the cap immediately. So, if we cut/trade him today we would have to absorb a $12-13 million cap hit. If we were to do it after June 1, 2009 we would have the same charges against the cap that we would have if we didn't cut him. Bottom line is that it is too expensive for him to be either cut or traded right now but that will change after June 1.

Remember, every cap dollar is money that we do not have to spend on other players. For instance, some people would like for us to sign Haynesworth next year but we have to "pay" Vick millions instead. I feel confident that every team has "dead money" like this, just not such big numbers and such an unusual situation.

I am not recommending anything, just trying to explain the situation. Any corrections are welcome.

how do u know that the commish wont step in and do something about this situation??it wouldnt be right for vick to step out of jail and get a pay check from us when hes not going to play for us anymore. his contract should be void and he should start back over again. we already lost the money blank was trying to get back in court, that should be his going away present. i understand he is still under contract with us and everything like that, but the commish should step in and void his contract as soon as he is released..
