Chris Houston

Recommended Posts

A little while ago I said that we should trade Houston for a draft pick in the offseason because I felt he was not a good Cover-2 corner and more of a man-to-man CB.

Then I was told he was the most physical CB in the 2006 draft and is a great fit for the Cover-2.

Then I just read that he is looking lost on the field.

What do we do with Chris Houston? I haven't been paying particular attention to his play and I'd like to know from someone who has or knows him a lot better than I do.

He's got the tools to be a solid cornerback in this league, but I don't think he's got a great cast of teammates in the secondary to help him become that great CB. He's a physical CB but sometimes he gets too physical. He often has troubles locating the ball. Most of his problems though are coachable, and that's the good news. I agree with you though that I don't think he's ready to be a starting cornerback in this defense because he's more of a man to man cover guy instead of a zone defender.

The problem was we drafted him to be the man to man corner opposite D.Hall and he does excel in man to man but we have suddenly become a cover 2 team, He is baisically re learning how to play in the NFL this season as he has got to get the Cover 2 down, Im not really ready to give up on him yet, if he show's no signs of improvement by the end of the season he may not be suited to play in cover 2 for the majority of the snaps.

i was just thinking about this also. hes a man to man guy but were playing him in a zone heavy scheme. its unfortunate for him but i dont know what well do about it. when we do play man he seems to do well though, so its not like hes useless. but late in the game he gave up the TD to rasheid (sp?) davis because he waited about 1/2-1 second too long to react when he was playing zone. had he started earlier he would have been able to make a play on the ball (perhaps).

this is what i've been trying to tell everybody all along and it definitely showed on that TD with 11 seconds left.

houston is NOT a zone corner. he's a man coverage guy. why is he a man coverage guy? because he has blazing speed to make up for his mistakes.

in zone coverage, players dont move as much. they go to their zone and well........cover. in man coverage, Houston is able to keep moving with his receiver and is always able to locate his assignment. he is NOT fit for zone coverage and never has been. that was even his biggest flaw coming out of Arkansas. what's that saying.......you cant teach an old dog new tricks?

now that guy in my sig knows how to play a mean zone coverage AND tight man coverage. also look out for Jairus Byrd out of Oregon next year.

Dude. You're killing me. I have us taking him next year in my new mock (in progress, not done yet). He's a great fit for the Cover-2: 6'0, 208 lbs, decent speed, great in zone coverage, hardest hitting CB in the college.

chris houston is a physical corner, but in the sense of bump and run man

he was the strongest man in the draft pound for pound... 22 reps on the bench i believe

but cover 2 corner i dont think so... but its not like were not ever going to use man coverage

depending on the cap hit and what we can get for him i would agree with you

i like him because he is what he is....a strong zone coverage defender that's not afraid to support those small dumpoff/flat routes. he can be had in tha 3rd round, but i doubt he comes out this year. if his numbers improve this year he'll be 2nd round material. he's a playmaker. i think he's had 12+ picks in tha last 2 years.
