Officiating this year has been terrible

Not just the NFL but on the college level as well. Usually the refs seem to be pretty inept every year but this year it is just beyond ridiculous. Everyone knows about the Hochuli call in Denver but there have been countless other terrible calls this year across the board that have cost teams in major ways. It makes it pretty frustrating to enjoy the games. I'd like to see both leagues sit down after their seasons and have serious discussions about reinterpreting exactly what constitutes a penalty and lightening up some and letting the guys play. Thoughts?

One of my favorite things about the game of soccer is the law (five) that refers to a referees job. It states that a referees job is to "maintain the spirit of the game". I think other sports could benefit from this idea.

Anytime you notice the officiating, they're probably screwing up. Don't get me wrong: if there's a penalty, call it, but be consistent and don't huddle up thinking about what you think the call is (see Aaron Rodgers' "illegal forward pass/intentional grounding/illegal forward pass" debacle vs Minnesota). Also, don't blow the whistle if you didn't see it. The assumption that Jennings touched the ball cost us a chance to win.

I am starting to think that all replays are bogus. If you saw the Miami/Georgia Tech game than you know what I am talking about. How in the **** can you review the play and spend 5 minutes looking at it and still make the wrong call? That is the problem with replay. What good is it if you still make the wrong call?

I get the impression they don't want the field refs to be skittish in their calls so they do what they can to justify the call on the field. IMO, college has always been worse than the pros but certain pro teams can be counted on to get the benefit of the doubt. Had that Denver player pushed Randy Moss at crunch time instead of Roddy White, it would have been pass interference because the referee would have been looking to call something. Roddy should have caught the ball, so I'm not complaining, but a foul in Foxborough is a foul in Atlanta as far as I am concerned.

Right on.

There was a while they appeared to be trying to keep Carolina in the game...

Totally agree and said as much to my wife and the fans around me. I still want to know how a receiver catches a ball, has possession, takes two or three steps, goes out of bounds and while OUT OF BOUNDS goes down and the ball pops out and they call it incomplete. I was ready to strangle someone. That call was complete bull.

The ref made the correct call. Dumb rule, but it is the rule.

No. That play was different then someone who taps his toes on the sideline and falls down and has to keep possession of the ball. Roddy caught the ball in bounces with possession and took 2 steps and then went out of bounces. At that moment the play is over. What happenes after that does not matter. We got hosed on that call just like Brian Billick said.
