FCC says Comcast should put NFL Network in digital cable lineup

Associated Press

Updated: October 11, 2008, 2:23 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Communications Commission has sided with the National Football League in a long-running programming dispute with Comcast Corp.

The FCC says Comcast should carry the league's NFL Network on its popular digital cable package.

The commission ruled that Comcast discriminated against the NFL Network by agreeing to carry the channel only on a more expensive sports cable service. The NFL filed the complaint against Comcast in May.

The FCC ruling now goes before an administrative law judge, who could force Comcast to carry the NFL programming at a certain price.

Comcast has argued that consumers will have to pay more for programming many may not want if the company is forced to include the NFL Network in its regular digital cable package.

The real bad guys in this cluster f##k is the NFL. Do some research on this and you will see that I am right.

Here is the basics of the whole thing. The NFL wants Comcast to pay them a certain amount per Comcast customer that subscribes to the NFL Network. This is why Comcast wants this channel on a sports package. Then the NFL would get money from everyone who subscribes to that sports package. Now here is where the NFL gets greedy. The NFL is saying that everyone should be able to watch the NFL Network and not have to pay extra for it. Therefore they are trying to force Comcast to carry it on their basic digital package. Sounds great but what they don't tell you is that they will receive the same amount of money from Comcast per subscriber. Well the amount of subscribers would go up drastically. That means that Comcast gets screwed. The 85 year old grandmother down the street doesn't even watch the channel or want it but the NFL would still get money from Comcast because she subscribes to the basic package that their channel is a part of.

So I say f##k the NFL.

So it's fair that I should be forced to pay extra money for the Hallmark channel, E! TV, a crapload of Spanish channels, some junky music channels, the shopping network, the golf and racing networks, but not fair that someone else should pay for NFLN?

We're only talking about like 62 cents per subscriber per month here - it's not like some ridiculous financial hardship anyway...

Let's see we live in the US and we speak English here. How about a novel idea: learn English. Do they have any other language channels? None that I'm aware of. If they have a problem with that they can get the heck out of here. By the way I have no problem with people from Puerto Rico, they are not illegal alien criminals. But they still need to speak our language if they want to live here.

This is the scam that the Big Ten Network pulled. They charged $1.11 per subscriber and wouldn't accept a sports tier. Consequently, they embarrassed Time Warner into carrying them and will be paid that amount per subscriber for 9 million households per month. Even people who live outside of the Big Ten schools' fan base. For those who live within the fan base, 80% of broadcast football and basketball games will now be on cable that used to be for free.

The SEC worked out a different sort of deal with ESPN, but the NFL's and Big Ten's successful cash grabs will probably embolden the Pac-10, Big 12, Big East and ACC to pull their own greedy schemes too. Consequently, although I'm not a fan of any Big 10 schools, I'm also glad that the league sucks ### this year.

I'll agree that the NFL is just as wrong,it has totally abused it's Anti-trust privileges, but the Cable companies are no better. The NFL should be forced to have sunday ticket on cable, and Comcast should be forced to carry NFL network as basic cable package. It's the Consumer that has lost this battle so far.

Did you know that America doesn't have an official language? Hmmm

Better question, have you tried to learn a language, as an adult, married with a family, and working full-time?

It takes time.

Something tells me you see a Hispanic person, assume their illegal, assume they don't speak English and then get all bent out of shape.

Like every channel they get a certain percentage based upon viewing not just the upgrade packages. The NFL will get less revenue because less people are willing to pay the outrageous price for the sports package which will include a bunch of crap that an NFL fan does not necessarily want. The part you left off was Comcast Corp. is the parent company of the Golf Channel. The fact that I pay well over $100 just to watch TV and 60% of the channels are crap is because of things like this. Comcast decides which channels go into the basic package thereby offering their own channel but not the NFL without paying more. Granted they are different sports but Comcast is deciding which sports go into which tier monopolizing it to some extent because most people, I believe around 70%, will not pay even more for a service that costs too much. On top of that I have never met anyone who is satisfied by the ignorant and indifferent (don't know; don't care) attitude when it comes to service issues.

I hate when you call the TV company or phone company or who every and you have to try to talk to someone who you can't understand a **** thing they say.

I got a question for you guys. Does anyone know if we are gonna have to pay extra for the MLB Network that starts in January? Also why is all the FUESPN channels on the basic package but they want you to pay extra for FUESPNU?

i have fio's and i get NFL network.....its only good to watch during the football season...other than that...like suring may and june all they do is replay classic boring games...90% of which feature brett favre..the thing that makes the mad the most is that the only carrier of sunday ticket is directv (that i know of)...NFL should have something on their website allowing you to watch the games...somewhat like MLB.TV...the MLB out-does the NFL completely...and the MLB has 162 games of each team to worry about not 16

Yeah but you have to pay for that too. NFL has that deal with Directv that he have had in place since 1996 or 1997 I believe it was when they first started it. Can you get MLB Extra Innings on any other system other than Directv? What about the NHL or other packages?

i cant get extra innings but i think i can buy something called a sports package..and it would give me networks like YES (yankees) and FCS....i seriously wouldnt mind paying money to watch streams of games given out by NFL.com

Yeah. I know that Directv blacksout games shown on YES and stuff but you can watch the other stuff if you buy the sports package. The only reason I would buy the sports package would be for FUESPNU. I can't believe they want you to pay extra for that.

It is mind boggling to me that companies hire people that you can't understand to talk on the phone for them. Obviously they don't want you to call their customer service center.

Now, how could it cost more to add a channel you're already offering? Basically, they are saying, if we do this, we're jackin up everybody's rates so our profit margins don't change. Just like a corporation. They don't do anything with an eye on the long term profitability. It's all about instant gratification...

The NFL network also forced the Falcons to get rid of the Falcons TV channel on Comcast. This was probably a good thing for the 2007 season but this year it would have been nice to have.

the nfl network didn't make that decision, the owners did.

the owners make all decisions regarding revenue income and then they collectively bargain with the players on how it would be split.

the nfl wants comcast to put the nfl network onto a basic packsge that customers would not have to pay extra to view, like the golf channel, the tennis network, and nbatv. You even get a fishing channel for free and they(comcast) wanted the football fans to pay for their nfl channel simply because they (comcast) saw it as a way to get money from the biggest sports TV market in the country.

Now I'm not sure about Comcast but with Cox I get all of the crapload that you mentioned with extented basic. Now as much as I like the NFL I don't want to spend .62 cents or even .6 cents to watch it or anything else that requires me to basicly rent a digital box from Cox to do so.

I hate to break it to all of you but there really is more to life then watching TV all the time, and by my post count you can tell it's come coming here all the time either.

Like I said screw those channels if you don't like it get out. Do you see channels in Italian, German, Nigerian, etc. No because those people are here to assimilate. You assimilate to our freakin culture not yours. Our culture is superior that's why people want to come here. You don't see Americans trying to immigrate to Mexico, Domincian Republic, etc because those countries are third world pieces of crap. Don't try to bring your failed pathetic culture here. We don't want it.
