To win in the NFL

Bring It

Recommended Posts

Last week I said for us to win in Tampa we had to :

1) Protect Ryan

2) Crush Griese

Of course there were the obvious sarcastic comments stating that that's true in ANY game, any week.

We did neither .................very well.

Result ?? Loss.

In observing the NFL over many years I've become convinced of a couple of things :

--- Most teams have very good quality athletes. Very close to each other in ability.

--- Coaching staffs vary all over the place in philosophy.............and SKILL. Some complicate the game so badly, Brady. Montana, or Marino couldn't figure out what the h.ell is going on.

--- As I see it, the key to winning is...............PASS RUSH. You give ANY half way decent NFL QB time to find an open receiver, he will indeed find one...........and connect. Especially with 7 or 8 seconds, as Romo or Brady usually have. Conversely, if you consistantly find ways to harrass and / or sack the QB..............CONSISTANTLY.................game over. Example : last Super Bowl, and hundreds of other games won over the years thruout the league.

Again, I realize this is no "cosmic revelation", but I see so much sophisticated game planning and scheming, when in the end, a torrid pass rush wipes out all the offensive game plans.

Yep...but when you have a wasted #8th pick at DE, your not going to get much of a rush. DE may be our top priority next off season.

It's not just Jamaal. We lost Kerney to free agency and released the oft-injured Coleman (who was actually good for a couple of years). I wasn't sure that filing the void with journeymen was the answer. That being said I don't think think our defense has played that poorly but you need someone besides Abe getting sacks.

Coleman didn't cut it last year. Didn't Babs just register a sack?

One of the problems the Falcons face is the fact they HAVE to get a pass rush with only four players. The DBs are too young to be able to handle the extra pressure of covering everyone. If they could send Nicholas or Brooking on blitzes it would help out John and the rest of the DL.

Lets face it Brooking isn't a 3rd down LB as far as covering RBs and TEs anymore.

The Falcons need to incorporate him into the blitz package for pressure.

As long as they only send 4 then the Falcons will continue to have issues getting the needed pressure on QBs.

Good observation. If you send a fifth, from several different areas, this disrupts the pass blocking scheme. This improves the chances of Abe or JA98 to apply pressure and maybe Jamal will get a sack. This may be a case of when you break the seal things will keep flowing.

AMEN !!!

NO PASS RUSH? IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE, MOST TEAMS ARE GOING TO HAVE THEIR WAY WITH YOU.

THEY'LL MAKE YOUR SECONDARY LOOK REAL BAD. I DON'T CARE HOW GOOD THEY ARE. IF YOU'VE

ONLY GOT ONE STAND-OUT RUSHER LIKE WE HAVE, ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS DOUBLE AND TRIPLE

TEAM HIM. NO PASS RUSH IN THE NFL MEANS YOU BETTER BE IN A BOMB SHELTER, BECAUSE YOU'LL

BE BOMBED MORE THAN THE CITY OF LONDON IN WORLD WAR TWO. SO FAR, THESE FIRST TWO TEAMS

HAVE ONLY SENT RECONNAISSANCE RUNS ON US. AFTER THIS NEXT GAME EXPECT TO SEE THE REAL

BOMB RUNS ON US. THE KIND WHERE THEY DON'T HOLD BACK NOTHING. THEY'LL SEND THEIR FULL

ARSENALS AT US. NO PASS RUSH? ......... WITHOUT ONE YOU LOOSE THE WAR !!

Maybe we'll see more creative pass rush schemes starting this week.

We need it BAD !!!

I disagree, while we didnt get much pressure on griese, i feel the protection of Ryan was more than adaquate. I even counted silently one play and he had almost six seconds in the pocket. He just couldnt find an open reciever and was pulling a joey harrington deer in headlights look for most of the day

To win in the NFL

It was proven years ago that to win in the NFL you have to:

1. Run the ball - we did in week 1 and didn't in week 2

2. Stop the run - we did in week 1 and didn't in week 2

3. Win the turnover battle - we did in week 1 and didn't in week 2

4. Have more big plays than you allow (20+ yarders) - we did in week 1 and didn't in week 2

5. Play good special teams - we were OK both weeks

This blueprint never really changes. If you go check the stats from all the games this past week you'll probably find that the teams that did most of these things won 90% of the time.
