jm_falcons
For those of you who think we should have picked Dorsey in the draft. Do not forget that during the first half of the season...the DL was not the problem. In fact...the defensive front 7 did not look that bad at all. It was not until the team started giving up under Petrino that the Defense began to play bad. Add in a cancerous attitude from D Hall and there you go...a melt down of the whole team.Coleman was injured for most of the year so him not being on the team this year is not an issue along our DL. I also find it rather interesting that if our DL needed Dorsey so much then why have the Falcons not surrendered a TD in the last 13 qtrs of pre season football? Gee...our front 7 must be horrible!Folks...the problem out of the gate last year was our QB and OL. I cannot believe some folks around here fail to see that. Go back and review the early part of the season...our D was just fine. But once you go 3 and out over and over and over and over again...the D starts to wear down...physically and psychologically. It was a combo of all those factors that made our defense worse as the season went along. This year...we have a new qb who won the job because he is the best qb we have. The OL is improved with some new personnel...a new aggressive attitude and a new coaching staff. Whether they will be better or not remains to be seen but can they get any worse? The defensive front 7 is the strength of this team. Lofton is new but come on...even though he's a rookie...the guy is like a sledge hammer. You honestly think that Demorrio Williams is better?Ryan was the right choice....7-9 this year....and I'll take it.
g-dawg
I agree with you that Matt Ryan was the right pick. Up until 3 days before the draft, I wanted Glen Dorsey but Matt Ryan finally won me over and I have not looked back - Matt Ryan will be a very good to potentially great QB for our Falcons.....Having said all of that, you are basing a strength of the team as the Defensive front seven is completely delusional. Sure, the Falcons looked good on defense in the pre-season - but its the "pre-season" my man. The Defensive Tackle position is "weak"(and that is being nice) and Jamaal Anderson has not looked good yet. More than likely, the defense will be weaker than our offense for 2009 and the Falcons would have absoluelty benefited from a star player like Glen Dorsey as well.I think the defensive tackle position will be a "top priority" in the Falcons draft plans for 2009.... maxatlanta
I was for Dorsey but have come around and am optimistic about Ryan. I don't agree with everyone that he is the best QB because I think Redman gives you 90% of what Ryan does this year but without the costly rookie mistakes. That said, I'm still glad he's starting and getting those out of the way now. I wouldn't want it any other way.We have a nice LB core, but our Dline has one impact player- Abe. Grady is good but he's not a 3 down DT. Babineuax is good not great, and Jamaal is poor. Anyone playing opposite Abraham ought to be able to sleepwalk into 6 sacks. The rest are journeymen and rookies. IMO stopping the run will be an issue for our front 7 until we prove otherwise. The more help we give them the more we leave our CBs out to dry.The biggest problem last year was coaching, and it feels like did a good job addressing that. muskokas finest ©
I wonder what the 49er boards were saying on the eve of Alex Smith's debut? Ryan has more going for him physically and mentally, but I'd just as soon wait a few years to judge.
FalconFanForLife
Yeah it's too early to know how Ryan will work out, but I think it is safe to say he has been impressive so far this year. I do agree with TD that drafting a franchise QB was the right move: now lets hope Ryan develops into a winner.I just can't agree with you either on the defensive line. I think it may be our biggest weakness, depending on how our young secondary performs in games. I really believe the linebackers are the strength of this defense, and I also see the defensive line getting a LOT of attention in this year's draft. But hopefully I am wrong and the defensive line plays really well this season. They have played the run well so far, but I am worried about their ability to rush the passer. The secondary is very young, so that is still a concern despite their good performance in the preseason.
JayOzOne
Abe might be the only player who can get into the backfield, but we need the other guys to at least not get pushed back so the linebackers can make plays. If we cannot dominate from the DL, we have to avoid being dominated.
