Over-Confident Lions Fans

Recommended Posts

Ummm... Fellas, excuse me for injecting reason into the conversation, but these guys are FANS of the Lions. Why wouldn't they have the same hope and expectations for success that we have for our team? It is THEIR board. It'll be fun to go back after we smack them and find out who they blame on the team for losing the game (because we never could beat them without somebody screwing up).

BTW, it's funny that in their confidence, we don't have any Lions trolls this year.

What's odd to me is, after reading this I looked around at other Lions boards and they seem much calmer and rational (far moreso than we typically do). The problem with the thread in question is that it represents the same circular reasoning we engage in, for example:

1. Multiple posters say the Falcons were terrible last year, therefore they must be terrible this year. At the same time, they maintain that THEIR team, which ended the season horribly, has vastly improved and last year is irrelevant.

2. The success of Matt Ryan and Sam Baker is meaningless because they did so only in preseason. Meanwhile, the success of Kitna, Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson are relevant because they dominated and preseason and therefore preseason counts.

3. The Falcons have no-name players on their defense and therefore the Lions have the advantage. However, the Lions have many veteran no-name players on their defense and these players have gelled into a defensive killing machine.

The reality is none of us knows what will happen Sunday. That's why they play the game. I find it laughable that Lions fans are predicting 30+ point victories but honestly I see statements like that made on this board all the time. Do I think the Falcons will win this game? Absolutely. Do I think the Lions coaching staff is underestimating the Falcons the way these Lions fans are? I'd sure like to think so, but I highly doubt it.

Either way, for Atlanta anything less than a decisive victory will be pawned off as "well they beat the Lions, big deal". A loss for the Lions though would be devastating after their preseason expectations have become so high.

Last time we played the Lions it was in Detroit and they beat us up pretty good. But for some reason the Lions are a MISERABLE road team. I also think we finally have a staff that won't let this team collapse after halftime (Falcons achilles heel for the last few years).

Was that on Thanksgiving? I don't remember.

They see a mature Kitna picking our inexperienced and confused defense apart. Their receivers have good hands, compete for the ball and have the strength and speed to turn short passes into long plays.

They see our "patchwork" offensive line struggling in pass protection and run blocking. They see a Rookie QB who has never experienced the speed and violence of a real NFL game.

It's easy to see how they would come to this conclusion.

They just do not know Mike Smith and Matt Ryan.

We'll make the formal introductions after a win.

Agreed. I've said and maintained that, at this point, my greatest expectation is the evolution from a losing culture to a winning one. This will inevitably breed consistent winners and notariety as a TEAM. It'll just take a little time. I figure if I've waited 30 years, I can wait 2 or 3 more.
