FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. – The Atlanta Falcons today signed free agents, linebacker Tony Gilbert and tight end Justin Peelle and completed the practice squad with the signing of defensive end Sean Conover and running back Kenneth Darby. The Falcons also released tight end Jason Rader and linebacker Tony Taylor.

Gilbert, 6-0, 248 pounds, spent the past five seasons (2003-07) with the Jacksonville Jaguars and was coached by then Defensive Coordinator Mike Smith. In 56 career games, Gilbert has totaled 23 tackles (15 solo), one sack and one fumble recovery. He left Jacksonville tied for sixth in team history with 38 special teams tackles. Gilbert is a native of Macon, Georgia and attended Central High School.

Peelle, 6-4, 250 pounds, was a member of the Miami Dolphins from 2006-07 and was coached by Falcons Offensive Coordinator Mike Mularkey who served as Miami’s Tight Ends Coach in 2007. In 93 career games, he has totaled 85 receptions for 614 yards and seven touchdowns. Last season, he set career highs in receptions (29), yards (228) and tied his career mark in touchdowns (two).

Darby, 5-10, 211 pounds, was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the seventh round of the 2007 NFL Draft out of Alabama. After being promoted from the Buccaneers practice squad on October 3, he posted two carries for nine yards and two receptions for 16 yards in his first career game against Carolina on December 30, 2007.

Conover, 6-5, 275 pounds, is a two-year veteran who spent both seasons with the Tennessee Titans. The Bucknell alum has collared 25 tackles (14 solo) in 11 career games.

Rader was signed as a free agent on March 14, 2008 and saw action in all four preseason contests for Atlanta.

Taylor competed in 16 games with the Falcons last season seeing the majority of action on special teams. He was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by Atlanta on May 1, 2007.

WTF?? that doesnt make sense. we just released him?? i mean he was battling for the 1st string job, so i assumed hed atleast be a good backup??? that really doesnt make sense to me, but i hope he picks up on another team.

also Stephen Nicholas cant be the reason, since Stephen plays OLB, and tony is a MLB, plus TT was the 2nd best ST guy last year. we got rid of both 2nd best STers last year.

Nicholas was a MLB at USF and backed up Brook in the middle last year.

There are only 53 roster spots. Doesn't mean Taylor is bad, but we just don't have room for him. Lofton is the starter for the future, so like Ryan, might as well throw him in the fire. The only reason that Taylor started the preseason games is because the coaches wanted Lofton to get ezperience playing with the earpiece in and Brooking was learning to be in control of the earpiece with the starting squad.

I like Taylor and wish him luck, but it's not that shocking.

shocker. i would have thought wire would be out. i knew we needed another LB but not to replace taylor. gilbert is a former bulldog too so what are you gonna do. i guess its safe to say the roster changes are done unless jennings falters.

Wire is a great special teamer that's why. That's the reason he was signed in the first place.

this makes me think Lofton wasnt ready, since if he was ready, then taylor would have been a good backup. Taylor was good at everything lofton was ok in, and lofton was good a everything taylor was ok in.

Gilbert knows the system and is probably going to start, or it could be that smith wants a vet backup.

lol I knew u would try to justify Taylor. Maybe he just isn't good enough? Maybe it has nothing to do with anybody but Taylor.

A question about Taylor's MLB play...

On plays where he shoots the gap and hits a running back one on one what was the result? Who won the battle? He or the running back? This is for those of you who have seen him play in this preseason. Please give an honest, NON-BIASED answer, if you can.

From seeing him play in the past at UGA, I know he has the ability to get to a play in time, but he usually needed help and couldn't finish the one-on-one matchups against bigger RBs or blocking FBs. After all, he isn't the biggest of MLBs.

;) you know me to well, but im adding in the fact that we are switching towards a tampa 2 for the 1st game, and like i said taylor and Lofton are good MLBs. Lofton is the better run stuffer, while taylor is the better coverage guy, and in a tampa 2 you MLB has to be coverage, so tony gilbert might be that coverage guy and ST guy. No lie that he is a better ST guy than taylor, and same with Coy Wire. I think we werent happy with ST, which could lead to the tt cut.

LOL are you drinking this early in the day?

Tony Taylor was cut because Lofton wasn't ready? That's the dumbest thing I've heard today. Taylor was cut because Lofton WAS ready. Tony Gilbert was brought in to be the backup.

Gilbert knows the system and is probably going to start...

Our special teams coverage has been phenomenal all preseason long, and has been one of the strengths of our team. Tony Taylor was probably cut because he just wasn't that good.
