Sam Baker is the real deal

I think he's had just as good or better pre-season than Jake Long. Long seems to be struggling with the NFL pass rush (as any Rookie would). I still think Long is the real deal though, but I'm much happier with Ryan/ Baker over Long/ Henne.

(Edit: I guess I missed the thread on this)

I've rarely seen Baker struggle at all, vs Long struggle with the pass rush. Heck, Baker made Vanden Bosch look bad, and that doesn't happen very often.

I wouldnt say any first rounder is a steal though ya know?

At the time I didnt think we reached at all...I thought it was a great pickup...but he is coming along faster than Blalock was last season.

Well yeah but we got him with the 21st pick? If the draft was today, after his strong performances in the preseason, he'd go higher than that.

Hmm yeah, lets just hope he can carry over to the season. Alot of players have shined in preseason, only to fade come season. Im knocking on wood that we dont experience that on our team hehe.

I will say he had an excellent pre-season. Lets hope it carries over into the regular season and all 16 games. I honestly expected nothing less from him. Sorry, but I really think the people killing Atlanta on draft day for the move just proved they didn't know what they were talking about. At the start of 2007 Baker was highly rated and thought to be a first round OT in 2008. Injuries slowed him down and we were lucky to get him. Lets hope he keeps it up

Exactly. I feel more comfortable with him as a left tackle then a lot of the people taken before him. It was a solid and justifiable trade and he has all the tools to be a good left tackle for a long time.

I expect him to have his struggles this year but I'm a lot more confident about our offensive line then I was this time last year (granted last year it didnt help going up against The Vikes and Jags 1st up, but I like our offensive line to win the battle against the Lions D-Line)

Not sure if anyone here watched USC/VA yesterday, but after USC's o-line continued to open gaping holes for their many RB's, Musberger mentioned how their LT (can't think of name) was just following in Sam Baker's footsteps and Kirk Herbstreit quickly agreed. They had some nice comments about how Baker was a two-time All-American and anchored that o-line for four years.

I'm sold on the guy. I was when we drafted him. I was definitely surprised to hear/see so many ppl call his selection a "reach" at no. 21. I was thinking "steal."

I agree, I always thought we got the best LT in the draft, and only reason he wasn't picked #1 was cause of his injury senior year.
