Humphrey Gets Another Shot at Hall of Fame

Former Falcons defensive end Claude Humphrey has been selected by the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Seniors Committee as a finalist for enshrinement into the Hall of Fame Class of 2009.

The NFL announced the news today.

Last season Falcons assistant head coach/secondary Emmitt Thomas was nominated by the committee. He went on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Humphrey and fellow nominee http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Hayes will join 15 yet to be determined candidates on the list of finalists. The Hall of Fame selection meeting will be held on January 31, 2009, the day before Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Florida.

To be elected, Humphrey must receive the same 80 percent voting support that is required of all finalists.

Humprhey was also a finalist in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

Humphrey was selected as the third player overall in the 1968 draft by the Falcons and was named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year that season.

Sacks didn't become an official stat until 1982, but Humphrey had an unofficial tally of 122 quarterback stops during his time with the Birds (1968-78) and three seasons with the Eagles.

He was a first-team All-Pro in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1977. He was also a six-time Pro Bowl selection.

The defensive end has already been honored locally. The Falcons career sack leader and former quarterback Steve Bartkowski were http://www.atlantafalcons.com/News/Article...nta_sports.aspx earlier this year.
