Turns out I, and others in the media, miscounted on the roster count. The team was at 77 players and thus got to the 75-man limit by moving Trey Lewis and Renardo Foster to reserve list. Here's the press release:

FLOWERY BRANCH, GA – The Atlanta Falcons today moved offensive lineman Renardo Foster to the reserve physically unable to perform list and moved defensive tackle Trey Lewis to the reserve non football injury list.

Foster, 6-7, 340 pounds, was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Falcons last season. The Louisville alum competed in seven games in 2007 while starting in two at left tackle.

Lewis, 6-3, 323 pounds, was selected by the Falcons in the sixth round (185th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. In nine games last season, he recorded 23 tackles (12 solo), one interception and one pass defensed.

The Falcons were in need of two roster moves to reach the NFL’s mandatory 75-man roster limit by today following the release of tight end Brad Listorti (August 11), wide receiver Joe Horn (August 19) and linebacker Isaac Brown (August 19). On Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. (EST), all NFL clubs will be required to reduce their roster size to a maximum of 53 players prior to the start of the regular season.

So, when Foster and / or Lewis are healthy, do they get to come back, or are they banished forever?? :D

Here's the deal.

They're both on a reserve list meaning they don't count to the active, 53-man roster. In 10 weeks they get to practice for 21 days (still not counting on the roster). At the end of that period, they either go on IR or to the active roster. In that case, room must be made on the 53-man.

Got that backwards... It's by Week 10 they have to be activated or put on IR, through the first six weeks of the season and then 21 days to practice.

Thanks. That answers my question.

Man o man...if only Lewis was healthy. He was having a nice season last year, and it would be nice to have an actual football player outside of Grady Jackson playing DT.

And I don't want to hear anything about Babs...he still doesn't do it for me. Maybe its because I compare him too much to Coleman, who was a monster....or maybe its because he really is terrible.....I don't know.

Well I think I can get back active in TATF. Whats interesting is that we bought in some bohemoths and they can't crack into the starting line. I had much hope that foster would help us on the line. That right there is my main concern about this team as well as the defense.

Let me say this as I officially welcome myself back to TATF after a long off season: Can you smell the football in the air? Ahh it is a lovely smell. B)

Just a couple of "technical" moves to get down to 75. Thanks for posting though.

WTF?? You still live here??!!??! :P

Good to see ya man....

And thanks for the info. J. Mike. Like to see them taking their time, and doing things in a very calculated way. It's a good problem to have when you don't have any immediate glaring stinkers to cut right off the bat. :)
