Broadcaster Skip Caray, who was in his 33rd season of calling Atlanta Braves games, died Sunday at his Atlanta home.

The son of former Hall of Fame play-by-play announcer Harry Caray, Skip Caray would have been 69 on Aug. 12. A cause of death was not given.

"Our baseball community has lost a legend today," Braves president John Schuerholz said in a statement. "The Braves family and Braves fans everywhere will sadly miss him. Our thoughts are with his wife Paula and his children."

Caray had done a majority of his work for TBS, which gave him a national audience and large fan base.

Caray began his broadcasting career at KMOX-Radio in St. Louis as host of a 15-minute high school sports show and as a sportscaster for high school basketball games. He later joined his father as a color commentator for University of Missouri football.

He began broadcasting baseball for the Tulsa Oilers of the Southern League in 1963. Caray was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame in 2005 with longtime broadcast partner Pete Van Wieren.

Born in St. Louis, Caray was a graduate of the University of Missouri, with honors in journalism. He is survived by his wife, Paula, and four children; Chip, Cindy, Shayelyn, and Josh and seven grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

I had no idea he was doing that poorly. RIP.

Same here. I knew he had the heart attack last year and he was out for a while, but it was hilarious when he came back and was bitching about not being able to eat fried foods when the camera men would pan around and show the fans stuffing their faces.

I'm just in shock," Chip said. "I know he wasn't feeling good, but this was unexpected. He hung the moon for me. I got to talk to him [on Saturday], and the last thing I got to say to him was, 'I love you.

****. Not trying to be a female, but that right there made my eyes water. Hopefully Chip can hang in there.

I'm only 19 years old, but this is the guy I grew up listening to when I watched baseball. It's really a shame to see the man pass, but it was his time. I just recently met Chip down at Spring Training, and talked to him about the Braves and his dad. Guy couldn't look up to anyone else more than his father, and I'm sure it's hitting him very hard. Hopefully they can get through this, and Chip can become what his father and grandfather were..legends in this sport. RIP Skip.

That's crazy. He just did a game recently.

Three days ago. He had been scheduled to work this past weekend but had bronchitis and couldn't. He also was shown on camera eating some pizza last week, which is going to crack me up for a while. It's a perfect summary of what Skip Caray was about.

God, this sucks.

i remember seeing that. a chef had brought it up and they weren't going to let him have any of it. or was it him and another that weren't going to let another announcer have any of it?

I wouldn't doubt them trying to hold him back. When he came back from the heart attack last year, all he did was complain about not being to eat fried foods on every radio broadcast.
