China's Emergence as a World Power

China is a growing world power because if it's vast population and rapidly growing economy. As China emerges as a world power it will face certain growing pains. These pains include eradicating the poverty rate in all of the country, improving its human rights policies, and as China grows so will its responsibility to make ethical and moral decisions in its foreign policy. As China continues to grow economically and the economy ***** into a capitalism economy the pressure from its citizen and the outside world to switch to a democracy will grow.

China is the world's 4th largest economy and 2nd largest in purchasing power and is still growing at historically rapid rates. As China's economy grows the need for infrastructure has grown leading China to be the largest consumer of steel, concrete, and copper. China is the 3rd largest importer and 2nd largest exporter in the world's economy. China's economic growth has stemmed from the government's decision to switch from a more traditional communist economy to capitalism or market economy. This has lead to major cities by port mostly in eastern China to experience rapid growth because of China's cheap labor and massive population. As the economy grows in urban areas to the east in western rural China the economy has barely grown and poverty is still sporadic in western China. This is because western China is mostly farm land and since a major body of water is not near there is little way for local economies to grow. This has lead to a poverty rate of 10% in China which is Roughly 130 million people. As China's economic freedom grows in its rapidly growing economy to expectation for more political freedom and human rights will grow.

China has had major human rights problems as it emerges as a major world power. China has tight control over the press limiting the right to freedom of speech and press. China has also censored all political speech and information from the internet or other avenues information spreads. China has a horrendous judicial system for a major world power. China's Judicial system will often detain people for length periods of time without trail, it will make prisoners make forced confessions, mistreats the prisoners with torture. China is the leader of the world in capital punishment as it accounts for 90% of executions in today's society. China has also limited or striped its people of the freedom of speech, assembly, association, religion, press and has limited its citizen's labor rights so it could provide cheap labor to keep prices down. This has lead to many western countries to limit ties with China.

China's foreign policy is basically a "don't tell, don't ask policy" it will deal with any country in the world the will benefit China economically. All that China requires is that any country that wants to open diplomatic relations to china must denounce the ROC or Taiwan and supports China's claim to Taiwan. Taiwan was formed by the losers of the Chinese civil war and the PRC has since wanted it to be a part of china. China will not allow the passage through China to people who openly support Taiwan such as political leaders and religious leaders such as the Dali Lama. Other than the U.S. China does not deal with people that support the Taiwan and only tolerates the U.S. support because of the two intertwining economies.

As China grows it will face some problems in the future or growing pains. These pains include reducing the poverty rate in rural China, and allowing its people more political freedom. The limited economic growth outside of western China is extremely difficult to solve because of its geographic features and location. China's eastern half is mostly rural farm land. This leads to people in western China not to grow economically and still remain in poverty. But as economic freedom grows in the east so will the expectation of political freedom. As people get certain rights they feel like they should deserve more basic rights and shift more towards a democratic society. This is especially true with many western countries pressuring China to give its people more basic human rights and improve its judicial system.

As China continues to grow so will controversy surrounding China. China is still viewed in America as a Communist County that is not to be trusted as it grows. As long as China is a communist government that limits its people's rights the pessimistic view will overtake the optimistic one because the people of China will not be truly benefited. China is a world power economically and soon militarily, but it is not a leader in free society or Justice in today's world.
