It is July 2008, if Falcons truly want a clean break, why is Vick still on the roster?

Green Bay should start Aaron Rodgers. And forget Brett Favre.

Atlanta should start Matt Ryan in Week 1 if Mr. Blank truly believe in Matt Ryan (34 million guaranteed), and just let Vick go... Many have said Vick is only a RB and can't help most teams because of his alleged poor QB skills.. Just let him go, and let Matt Ryan show what he is capable of doing... Ryan is portrayed as someone who will be infinitely better than Vick and starting Ryan on Week 1 would show the world that the Falcons have finally moved forward..

THE FALCONS MAY HAVE ...... BUT YOU HAVEN'T. IF MIKE'S JUST A RUNNING BACK IT OUGHT TO BE EASY TO DO. HE MUST BE SOME KIND OF QB, BECAUSE YOU KEEP TALKING ABOUT HIM AND MATT IN THE SAME BREATH. DON'T WORRY ABOUT MIKE, MATT BETTER WORRY ABOUT REDMAN.;)

Just let Vick go - as in cutting him? I think there's a couple of million cap reasons not to cut him.

You have to think in economics, not emotions when dealing with Vick's connection to the falcons at the moment.

Come week 1 you put the best man on the field - be it Ryan, Redman or even Shockley.

If Ryan is not the best QB at that time - give him playing time, but don't hand him the reins until he gives us the best chance to win

.......meaning.......trade him in a blockbuster deal and continue to REBUILD!

You do realize that unless we cut him his contract doesn't change so it's part of the deal.

Who in their right mind is going to trade for him with that contract?  I don't think there is a team with enough cap space to absorb his contract.

We either cut him or keep him.

There is no trade...

I didn't even bother reading through all the posts but hopefully someone understands since this is the 100th post on the subject.

The reason Vick is not cut is because he has 14.9M of his unamortized bonus that affects the salary cap.  If we cut him now then @ 5M hits this year and the remaining 9.9M hits next year.  The Falcons cut a few vets with high salaries this year so their bonus money more than likely hit this year and will still be there next year.

We are not trading Vick because idiot would pay for at least the bonus portion for a guy that is of no use because he is in jail.  Also no one is foolish enough to take on his ridiculous salary from his existing contract.

The Falcons are spreading out their losses.

i highly doubt that he is still going to get his existing contract back after being away from the game for so long. goddell has got to rule in the nfl's favor on this one, that whoever signs him, whether it be the falcons or another team, they give him a reduced, incentative based contract. its not like vick is gonna get out of jail and tell a team no he wants his existing contract honored. vick has to prove to people he deserves a 2nd chance and should take whatever amount a team gives him to prove himself.

1. Vick's contract is still in place... he doesn't "get it back" when he's out of jail.  The Falcons are within their legal right to cut him but we have the added part of a cap hit.

2. NLFPA would NEVER agree to this.... not the part about "undoing" the contract.

ok let me sell u this..if matt ryan went to jail 2morrow and was sentenced to 5 years jail time for vehicle manslaughter, when he gets out of jail, do the falcons still have to honor the last year of his contract??

just shut up about vick

we dont need to trade him or cut him or anything. just let it be and whatever happens, let it happen. really? who gives a sh!t about vick anymore? hes in prison and when hes out of prison he probably wont be reinstated to the nfl right away.

bottom line, hes not going to play for the falcons. whether hes on the roster right now is completely irrelevant.

No.  The Falcons could him and then get a cap hit for cutting him.

Unless they cut him the contract is still in place.... as far as other NFL teams go.

We couldn't re-structure his contract unless he agreed to it.  And many times re-doing the contract like that involves cutting and then resigning the player to the new numbers.

im guessing your talking about me saying vicks not playing for the falcons again? im no ms cleo, thats just common sense.

lets be realistic here.

vick gets out of jail when? probably a year. he'll be 30.

goodell will let him play? well thats the big question. answer is maybe eventually. but most defineitly he will suspend vick for at LEAST a year. (goodell suspends henry for 8 games for what? getting arrested a few times for DUI, possession of marijuana, and getting in a fight. Vick was involved in dog fighting for years, he just never got caught until later). Vick embarassed the NFL, he took advantage of Arthur Blank, he lied to Roger Goodell, he lied to the fans.

I dont know who you're talking about, but if we're both talking about Goodell,  Why would he NOT suspend Vick?? you think he feels bad for him?

ok so heres the realistic scenario. vick gets out of prison at age 30, he gets reinstated to nfl and is eligible to play at age 32. at year what? 2012?

you think falcons are going to pay him what hes due from his current contract at age 32 for a guy that hasnt played football for 5 years? whats the other option? cut him and resign him to a miniumum contract.

but that just wouldnt make any sense.... Arthur Blank (who doesnt like VIck... because he ruined his team) is going to sign Vick for what? a big distraction.

im being realistic. trust me, im a big michael vick fan. and im hoping he gets out of jail soon and goodell does let him play right away. but its just not going to happen.

The short answer to your question is yes, unless:  (1) There is some provision in the contract that specifically states otherwise; (2) The team cuts him; or, (3) He agrees to restructure his contract.  If he were traded, the other team would have to take him with the last year on the current contract remaining, or negotiate a restructure/trade deal, or wait until he is cut and negotiate directly with him.
