A TDWII Gift to AFMB: 16 Sundays

Recommended Posts

Last year sucked.  As far as any season that I ve been a sports fan, last season was by the far the worst that I had ever experienced.  In truth, I think my dedication to the Falcons failed to wilt only out of habit of watching them every Sunday and living and dying with every play.  But I have to admit, watching the team in 2007 was simply brutal.  There was no energy no passion and it showed on the field and with all of us& a disgruntled, frustrated and disenfranchised fan base.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

One of the things I ve always looked forward to during football season were the post-game shows and day after re-caps and analysis in the paper or online.  I remember Stephanie Blank saying something similar during the 2004 season when the Falcons were on the way to the NFC Championship Game.  It s obviously cool when you re team is winning to see league and press reaction to it.  But even in seasons where the ultimate outcome was less than hoped like in 2005 and 2006, there were still moments and weeks where I would watch and read incessantly.  Even when we lost.

If you are like me, last years whole experience robbed that from all of us.  I kind of felt as if the wind was taken out of our sails before the season even began.  Even in weeks where we won, I felt the team was stuck in reverse.  I was behind Petrino, but simply put, I felt we had serious personnel issues on both sides of the ball and figured that we had short term solutions at QB and RB.  There were glimmers of hope (Roddy White and Michael Boley), but by in large, 2007 was awful it sucked the hope right out of you.  When the Petrino betrayal hit, you simply wanted the season to end.  I don t think the disappointment and pain was tied entirely to a 4-12 record, but rather how we got there.  The joy of being a Falcon fan was completely gone and I was just waiting for the next excruciating hammer to drop.

To come onto the AFMB was to have to wade through the endless bickering and senseless threads about Vick that always seemed to veered into racial jousting and then quickly into accusations of some sort.  A forum was dedicated to the topic on the board, but it was painful to simply stick by the franchise.  As a result, many fans have left in droves eliminating a season ticket waiting list.  Even now, we don t know the extent of the damage done to this constituency.

However, this off-season has been promising and left all still on the bandwagon with their fingers crossed that at the very least, we are getting the train back on the tracks .  Being smack dab in the middle of absolutely nothing happening (even Peter King s MMQB is on hiatus) in the NFL, I figured I would embark on a project. Fact is, if you are still coming to message board during these dog days, you truly are a die-hard.  My endeavor would be to project each game on the Falcons schedule and provide a box score and write-up for it.  Sometimes the write-ups would be detailed accounts of the game, others might focus on a players contribution to the game or their role with the team.  But each game and write-up would unravel the story of the Falcons 2008 season in as realistic a fashion as possible.

The goal?  Try and re-create the excitement and enthusiasm of going through the week by week trials and tribulations of watching the Falcons again.  Last year, it seemed like we simply died a slow death on a day-by-day basis.  Perhaps this project can serve to feed the enthusiasm and anticipation of this season for those who choose to read it.

I ll publish one daily for 16 weekdays (not including July 4) starting today, June 16.  Each week will be titled 16 Sundays with the appropriate week for easy finding.  We don t go 16-0 or 0-16.  It was important for me to deliver a realistic outlook in projecting the 2008 season and its story lines.  If it wasn t plausible, it wasn t worth it.  I ve spent the last 3 weeks or so coming up with this concept and bringing it to fruition.  For me, this turned out to be therapeutic in a way and I hope at least some of you enjoy these as the faucet of any substantial news about the Falcons (or even in the NFL in general) is at a standstill.  Week 1 is (will be) linked below.

TDWII, you ROCK because you get it.  Football, the Falcons...it's not only about gameday.  I have to tell my wife over and over again that the reason I get so upset when we lose is that it basically wrecks all the things I enjoy during the entire week.  NFL Gameday...Coachspeak and Point After (all on NFL Network for those who don't know)... Inside the NFL (Why oh why did last season have to be the LAST season!!??)... AFMB and TATF... my enjoyment of these, some of my favorite programs, all hinges on the Falcons winning or losing, or at least putting on a good fight.  Heck, I can't even enjoy Monday Night Football as much when we lose pathetically.  I tried to tell my wife it's like if all of her favorite television programs (Lost, House, 24, etc) just killed off all of her favorite characters and replaced them with sh#tty ones.  That's what the entire last season was like.  So bad I barely enjoyed the four wins we did muster.  And that translated into a whole lotta bad WEEKS, not just bad days.

For what it's worth: "Inside The NFL" is going to be picked up by Showtime this upcoming season.
