Gilmour should have been mentioned at some point, there's just an awful lot of guitarists that came to my mind personally. He's great, but my constantly shifting top 5 still looks like:

Hendrix

Clapton

Vaughn

Beck

Duane Allman

In some order. And that's with the understanding that there are many great guitarists out there and this is my personal opinion.

That being said, I can't stand AC/DC and I honestly believe Rush to be deaf Satan's answer to Deep Purple.

Technically Angus Young isn't much, but that doesn't mean he isn't a good guitarist...

FalconFansince80 (5/12/2008)

Any concert Angus happens to be playing.. He gives 110%. Theres no burning a guitar or any of that rubbish. Duane Allman? Why are you even talking about him? I mean seriously.

I imagine he mentioned Duane Allman because he was one of the best guitarists who ever lived...

Linkin Park - What I've done

Coldplay - Fix you

Sum 41 - Over My Head

Angels & Airwaves (Blink inc.) - The War

Third Eye Blind - Jumper

As for the Guitarists, Jimmy Page is my Fav. Matthias Jabs, Synyster Gates, and of course, Chuck Norris.

Chuck's gutair is a chainsaw with strings and when Chuck plays a solo its so powerful your ears rupture and your eyes bleed.

A lot of people are posting solo artists -- I didn't know we could do that or my list would be different

The original poster stipulated:

"Any band. any era. any genre

You may also include an individual singer if you'd like."

But I agree with you since I listed only bands.

The Pharcyde - Passin Me By

Run DMC - It's Tricky

The Beatles - Let it Be/While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Wu-Tang Clan - Bells of War/Protect Ya Neck/C.R.E.A.M./A Better Tomorrow - Can't pick a favorite.

Trying to narrow it down to just 5 bands is pretty much impossible for me, so I'll do a list of 10 (and that's still too few really). In no particular order:

The Stooges - fav songs: Down on the Street, Your Pretty Face is Going to ****, I Wanna Be Your Dog

High on Fire - Blessed Black Wings, Return to NOD, Fury Whip, The Face of Oblivion

The Melvins - Honey Bucket, Night Goat, A History of Bad Men, Sweet Willy Rollbar

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Red Right Hand, Stagger Lee, We Call Upon the Author, Get Ready for Love, The Weeping Song

Neil Young - Ohio, Southern Man, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Old Man

Hendrix - In From the Storm, Izabella, Ezy Ryder, I Don't Live Today, Spanish Castle Magic

Fugazi - Long Division, KYEO, Merchandise, Break, Ex-spectator, Guilford Fall

Black Sabbath - Hole in the Sky, War Pigs, Supernaut, Children of the Grave, Never Say Die, Evil Woman, Electric Funeral, Symptom of the Universe, The Wizard

AC/DC - Riff Raff, Let There Be Rock, Kicked in the Teeth, Walk All Over You, Problem Child

Lungfish - To Whom You Were Born, Hear the Children Sing, Oppress Yourself, The Words
