zgotts
I just read Mel Kiper's 1998 report on Leaf heading into the 98 draft. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft08/colu..._mel&id=3327728Leaf was a tough kid, big frame, and while he couldn't blaze past defenders, he was threat on the run. Those were his major assets. He also had probably the strongest arm in the draft. Have only been the starter for two years prior to being drafted, there were some questions with his decision making, and they felt he would force it sometimes. However, "Arm strength was never a problem". Also of note, teammates said he was extremely confident, and there wasn't a tougher, more confident QB out there.Flacco is also a huge QB, said to be tough, and also has been said to be confident and feel as though he fits right in with the "big boys". he also has been the starter for 2 years and has questionable decision-making, but has the best arm strength in the draft. He also is a threat to run. Personally, I do like the potential for Flacco to be a solid starter, and I highly doubt he has nearly as many emotional issues as Leaf did/does, but I still don't really want him. he still needs to adjust to taking snaps. And no, actually taking snaps is NOT a hard thing to learn, but after the snap you need to have proper footwork to drop back, and that DOES take time to learn. In addition, all Flacco really seems to be is a gunslinger, and thats not what we need. He'll be throwing the ball up when he can't find anyone, and that may have cut it in D-II college ball, but in the NFL that means INTs. what we need is a field general, some one who can come in and manage a game, and just make the short and important throws when we need them. It's obvious we aren't going for the "greatest show on turf" look, so we don't need a gunslinger. At this point, I'm thinking Henne is the safest bet of QB's in this draft., Followed by Brohm. da snowman
not another jump to conclusions member...so i guess ken dorsey was a tom brady type of QB..skinny, tall with an ok arm..
Bring It
I've read as much as I could find on Flacco and NOWHERE did I see any leadership in this guy. I posted something very similar 8 or 9 days ago about Flacco is another Leaf. A whiner. Playing QB in the NFL is extremely mental..........with leadership...........along with talent. formul8or
The way I see it, is Flacco needs to sit for a while before he's ready.Ryan needs to sit a few games before he's ready.Henne I don't see being anything spectacular.Brohm I think could play in game 1, but should wait a little while. direwolf
It was also said that Ryan Leaf alienated everyone around him, while Flacco hasn't got that reputation at all.Leaf's biggest issue in the NFL was that he was so obnoxious and uncoachable that no one could stand him. I don't think that that will be an issue with Flacco, who took coaching well at the Senior Bowl.I'm not saying we should take him; I just don't think that comparing him to Leaf coming out of college is a fair assessment.Direwolf
Mr. Hoopah!
Leaf was a head case. I read that at Washington St. he had to have a glass of milk and piece of pumpkin pie before every game or he flipped out. At one game he didn't get it and starting freaking out and the coaches wife found some for him and he started weeping. THAT'S why he failed. I've heard nothing of the sort about Flacco. BlacksburgHokie
If Leaf had been a little less polarizing with his personality and had been drafted late in the first round or after that, I really do believe he would have been a success in the league... Someone gets it. Flacco is a 4th or 5th round draft pick. All these "experts" have developed some type of man-crush on this joker. Probably b/c of his big arm and height. I have no clue how anyone could put this guy above Henne, Brohm, even Woodson. Heck, I'd draft Matt Flynn before I'd draft Joe Flacco. somecut8
how? Joe Flacco isn't the best QB in the draft. Heck, he isn't even projected to go in the first round

They were both huge projects... with horrible mechanics... basically both of them had big size... rocket arms... and just horrendous footwork
