Top 10 NFL Coaching Flops in History

Last night I had the pleasure of watching a program on the NFL Network entitled "Top 10 Coaches Who Belonged in College".  It was an interesting presentation covering the top ten coaches who had come into the NFL from (mostly) successful college programs, and failed miserably in the NFL.  There were comments from players, coaches, GM's, sports media types, etc., and they were all very candid and often brutal in their assessments of each of the coaches. Comments on some of these coaches included words such as: inept, liar, dishonest, lost and clueless, cowardly, etc.

The countdown from number 10 to number 1 is somewhat funny and somewhat painful to watch, especially if you are old enough to remember the NFL tenures of these guys; however, the wait was worthwhile just to listen to assorted NFL and media people absolutely RIP into Petrino.

It's being rebroadcast today (Wednesday, 4/16) at 5:30 p.m. and again on Sunday (4/20) at 12:00 noon, on the NFL Network, if you want to see for yourself.  Sorry, but there does not appear to be a link for this program on the NFL Network site.

If you get a chance to watch it, post a note here with your thoughts and comments.....

Can anyone post specific quotes about Petrino for someone who is getting shafted by cable and doesn't want to get screwed per box charge for satellite.

Thanks.

Coward, liar, dispicapable...

That pretty much sums it up.  I caught the show at #8 and watched it to see where Petrino would end up.  When it got to #2 and no Petrino I thought I had missed it; maybe he was # 9 or # 10.  But low and behold, there he was at # 1.  They made him look awful, even Don Banks was saying he was dispicable, and I rarely read Banks say good things about the Falcons.  It made me happy to see that D-Bag get taken to task like that, but what would really make me happy is to see top level recruits shy away from Arkansas because of his slimey nature.

Wow, I would have thought Nick Sabban would get the honors but Petrino did not even have a full season under his belt which is the reason why he got # 1, I assume.

I was so excited last year when Petrino signed. I thought he and Vick would work magic and create an entirely new concept of football offense. I felt as though we were Suberbowl bound. Oh well...lets get ready for the draft shall we??

Don't worry....Saban was completely trashed and was vilified as a liar and money chaser just as severely as Petrino.

And I confess that when I heard that Petrino signed to coach the Falcons, I was excited as well.  I moved here from the metro Louisville area in 2005 and saw what he did to make that college team into a respected national contender. I was under the grossly mistaken impression that his college skills would translate successfully in the NFL.

I watched it last night and LMAO when they said Petrino was #1.He is for sure a laughing stock in the NFL and now owners will probably think twice before hiring college coaches.

They were also all in agreement that patrino was not a man.

They actually said that patrino probably wouldnt be as high on this list as he was had he finished out the season,  the fact that he bolted after 13 weeks and six hours after he quite he was doing the hog sewie cheer is why he got the number 1 spott.

There was no doubt in my mind that Petrino would be #1. But, how was Saban only #7?

Here is the rundown for the show.

10. John McKay-funny watching Rich explain how bad his Dad did

9.Pete Carroll- was called a rah rah colege coach

8. **** McPherson-Syracuse to teh Pats-great at Syracuse-lousy with the Pats

7.Nick Saban- called a "The biggest Piece of ##### to ever hit Miami"

6.Dennis Erickson-Seahawks failure

5.Bill Peterson- called a terrible Coach, and he was, BUT he had hired for his staff the following upstart coaches, Bill Parcells, Joe Gibbs and Bobby Bowden!

4.Bud Wilkenson- Okla to the Cards, hired after beuing inactive for 14 years.

3.Steve Spurrier- proof that bringing Gator football to Washington can't win in the NFL.

2. Lou Holtz- they made fun of Lou and his shaky voice, even magic tricks couldn't get Lou a win in the NFL, a funny segment.

1. Yes, Pigtrino- he was called Gutless, Gutless, and discicable. Hands down, Peterino was made fun of and deservedly so. Excepts from Lawyer Malloy, Brooking, Warrick Dunn and Joey were straight to the point.

Petrino was the BIGGEST LOSER of all, but it was also said that it was a potentially great hire only the Coach QUIT!

Saban's saving grace was that he DID Finish the season, unlike Quitter Petrino.

They showed Mr Blank makingh the comment that right before the Monday night game Bobby said ,"you have a coach".

Only thing, Pigtrino stopped short of naming Emmitt Thomas.

I gotta add that the producers of that show did rub Petrino's face in the mud by playiong the Pig Sooey clip again and again, further by commenting that Bobby Petrino willl NEVER live that down. It was hilarious!

Yeah, it was hilarious, Petrino looked like an idiot!!

I loved the way Petrino was completely and totally trashed by everyone involved with this story: players, former players, media, etc.  I agree that it was justified (and satisfying) to watch them pour lemon and vinegar into the coward's wound when they kept replaying segments from the "Sooooey Pigggggg" press conference.  Petrino deserved every moment of humiliation.

Hopefully the parents of HS football players who might be considering Arkansas watched this segment.  It's always insightful to know up front what kind of person you're going to be dealing with for the next 4 years!

What puzzled me was that Saban wasn't number 2: certainly he was a far worse offender (another lying, slime-ball, money grubbing whore) than Lou Holtz.  I guess Holtz won the second billing because he was gone before the season ended with the Jets.

IMHO, the most important lesson from this show that everyone in the NFL needs to remember is this:  You don't select your head coach directly from the college ranks.  While your head coach may have some previous college experience, they really should come from the ranks of NFL coaches/assistants/coordinators/etc., and have a track record of success in dealing with NFL players and the media.  We Falcon's fans learned this lesson the hard way.

Common sense is not quite so common as one would believe.

I'm not suggesting anything except perhaps that it is an interesting coincidence, but did anybody else notice that 40% of the "Top 10 NFL Coaching Failures" have ties to the SEC and are people we just love to hate?

Petrino (Arkansas)

Holtz (South Carolina)

Saban (LSU)

Spurrier (Florida/SC)

Best line I read, that actually made me laugh, was on a thread about upcoming 2008 matchups. Which would be the best "grudge match game"? San Diego? Oakland?

Then one guy posted, "I wish we played Arkansas!"

I really enjoyed the entire show, but I was amazed about Pigtrino.

Not that he was number 1, but the amount of hate that people unrelated to the Falcons have for him.

Well nobody likes a liar and a coward...and the way he lied to Mr Blank before the Monday night game was unforgiveable.

I don't understand why John McKay wasn't further up on the list.  Having a NFL team that loses 26 in a row is horrible.

I certainly don't condone the way in which Coach Petrino left but I'm not gonna join the herd hate brigade and wish and hope so much bad on the person.

Ookie is first on the list of why the Falcons were so bad plus the malcontents Coach was stuck with.

I have no way of knowing, but it's possible he may have stayed at least until the end of the season if it hadn't been for the shameful circus act several players clowned with THAT NIGHT he quit.
