New Falcons brass Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith are getting a first-hand look at their quarterbacks.

No doubt they ll want to hide their eyes at some point during the mini-camp that started Monday in Flowery Branch. But will the play of Chris Redman and Joey Harrington (D.J. Shockley is still recovering from knee surgery) this week affect Atlanta s NFL Draft approach?

The draft is less than two weeks away. The Falcons own the third pick. Matt Ryan, the highest-rated quarterback in the draft, should be available.

Dimitroff, the general manager, and Smith, the head coach, have kept their intentions secret. They need a quarterback, but they also need offensive linemen, a defensive tackle, a cornerback and a safety.

The decision hinges on whether they believe Ryan is a potentially great quarterback or just the best in a weak class. My guess is Ryan is somewhere in between.

But with Florida s Tim Tebow and Oklahoma s Sam Bradford set to headline next year s crop, Atlanta might be wise to take a top player at another position and wait a year to pick a passer.
