Falcons entertain the notion that Chris Redman might not suck

By MJD

The Atlanta Falcons have a three-day minicamp scheduled next week, and during that minicamp, they'll need to make a decision about what to do with the third overall draft pick.

Matt Ryan, the highest-rated QB in the draft, will most likely be available. And the current Falcons depth chart at quarterback looks like this:

1) Chris Redman

2) Joey Harrington

3) DJ Shockley

Given that mess, it doesn't seem like taking Matt Ryan at three would be such a bad idea. On top of a young quarterback who projects to be pretty good, you also get a new face for the franchise, and someone who has never been accused of holding a dog's head underwater until it's dead.

But clouding the decision is the late-season play of Chris Redman, who finished last season with four games that were not all-together horrible. In four of the last 5 games, Redman had a QB rating over 85.0, and threw 10 touchdowns against just five interceptions.

Granted, you can't judge a guy on four games alone, especially when those four games came at the end of a season on a worthless team, when opposing defenses probably spent under 90 seconds considering how they might slow down Chris Redman. But a good game is still a good game, I guess.

On the other hand, Redman will be 31 years old when the season starts, he didn't take an NFL snap in 2004, 2005, or 2006, and even spent some time with Austin Wranglers of the Arena Football League. His résumé is not exactly sterling.

The fact that the Falcons are even considering the possibility of going into the 2008 season with Chris Redman as a starter is a testament to just how putrid they are. They have so many holes to fill that they actually look at Redman and say, "Yeah, we've got bigger needs than quarterback." That's frightening.

And it's even more frightening that they're probably right.

Give Redman a chance before wasting a top 3 pick on tired a.. Ryan.He played in the very weak ACC and threw 19 interceptions.Of course there is about 10 backups that are better than Harrington. Why not sign J. Lorenzen from the Giants if we are counting on Harrington.Shockley should be given a chance but with the fair weather fans around here he will never see the field.Go Redman, show something in this 3 day camp and save us all from Ryan.

Redman is not the best QB, just the best the Falcons have at the moment.  I don't think Redman has really been tested on the field.  Yes, his performances in last season's Cardinals and Seahawks games were encouraging, but the Cardinals had one of the worst defenses in the NFL, and the Seahawks (let us be honest) were playing at half speed during most of the last game of the season.

The Falcons need the "Quarterback of the Future."  In my august opinion, I believe Brian Brohm is the best QB in the 2008 draft and should be acquired by the Falcons, even with the #3 pick.

Redman was unfortunate to have a severe injury while with the Ravens.  It took him 4-5 years to totally recover.  He attempted to come back with New England but was cut, probably because his shoulder was not totally ready and had difficulty making certain throws as a result.  Last season, his shoulder held up.  He played great.  He had a nice long ball and was very accurate at all ranges.

In comparing Redman to the cast coming out of college....Redman's college stats blow away both Brohm and Ryan.  If Redman was coming out of college today with the same stats, he would be projected in the top 3 QB's.  He was going to be the Ravens future until having injury problems.  He started 6 games with the Ravens, going 3 - 3.  If Redman is truly back to form, we may have a very good QB that can play for the next 7 years.

I would hate to use our 3rd pick on Ryan and then have Redman playing like Anderson did last year for the Browns.  I feel that it would then be a waste of a 3rd pick.  Yes, it is a gamble...but going on his past experience from college, Ravens, and last year....I think it is a good risk.  Let's build our defense and O-Line....but if Johnson is still available in the 3rd or 4th, I think that would be a worthy draft risk.

You talk about not gambling but you wanna draft Johnson? That is gambling. He's a project at best.

And no, we need to draft a QB whether you like it or not this year.

Redman is a caretaker QB who will only win us so many games. We need a franchise guy that can win us games and who we can win consistently with.

JJ will not require that much work.  He played under the tutor of Jim Harbaugh.  He started 3 years in college and was a pass first QB.  According to scouting reports, his only flaws are putting too much zip on his short passes.  He also needs to bulk up some.

Coming from a small college does not worry me too much.  Kurt Warner, Culpepper, Romo, Big Ben, McNair, Garcia, and many more played for smaller schools.

As a sophomore in 2005, he burst on to the scene throwing for 3,256 yards while completing over 70% of his passes for 36 touchdowns and eight interceptions. As a junior, Johnson threw for 3,320 yards with a 66.3 completion percentage for 34 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He became a three time all american as a senior, throwing for 2,988 yards while completing 68.4% of his passes with an amazing ratio of 43 touchdowns to just one interception.

I think gambling from the 3rd round and later is ok....but let's build the defense and O-Line with our early picks.
