BUCS PLAN TO SPEND THEIR MONEY

With $44 million in cap room entering free agency the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a plan.

Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times reports that the team plans to spend a chunk of that money on contract extensions for fullback B.J. Askew, cornerback Philip Buchanon, defensive tackle Jovan Haye, running back Earnest Graham, and possibly safety Jermaine Phillips.

"One of the reasons you want to get some room under the salary cap is so you can extend your own players into the future," G.M. Bruce Allen told the Times. "We've had some dialogue with some of those players and we'll continue to do that.

"Our cap situation allows us the ability to not only [extend contracts], but also look at the possibility of trading for some players who might have huge cap numbers for some other teams.

"Sometimes, we not only look at an unrestricted free agent list, but we look at team's rosters and try to pinpoint players, whether they be on their practice squad or street free agents. Any way we can try and improve the team we will. And we do have the flexibility to look at all avenues right now."

One way or another, the Bucs will spend this year at least $28 million of that 2008 cap space. The CBA requires them to do so in order to meet the mandatory salary floor.

I wonder if they player they are planning on trading for with the huge cap hit would be DLo ???

Hall is in the final year of a rookie contract. He doesn't have a large cap hit. They're hinting at people like Larry Fitzgerald although ##### for PFT is to not say any particular names so that they claim they were right after the fact. It's like internet psychics but without the honesty about the fraudulence.

Pat Kirwan shot down the "rumor" that Tampa had $40 mil to spend in free agency this off-season the other day on SIRIUS NFL Radio. He said there was NO way they had that much and from the numbers he had they had way less than that (can't remember the number).

We'd be dumb to trade away our best DB to a division rival who ALSO plays the Cover 2 (Tampa 2). Why trade him to a team who would use him in the same scheme that some posters believe we will use? DUMB!

Are you serious? One line out of a column, which didn't include any non-Bucs players in the entire article?

How did you get "DHall to Tampa???" out of that? Reaching my friend, really reaching. ;)

It would be tough to trade him to a divisional rival...but if they gave us enough, I would do it. I don't think D.Hall fits there scheme though

Sure, I'll take their 1st, 2nd, next year's 1st, and Ronde Barber.

and 5 of their cheerleaders

Why in the world would you trade our best player on defense to a division rival? Who do the Bucs have on their roster that is worth trading D-hall for? No one! They suck!

I don't know that they necessarily had him in mind but yes he is in the last year of his contract and if there were a trade a new contract would certainly be part of that, otherwise who would want to give up value for a guy who could walk. Plus we all know Hall wants to break the bank so I really don't get your point.
