The Reality...

Recommended Posts

When thinking of the Free Agency and The Draft this year it would be best to think in terms of coaching and GM. Mostly coaching philosophy. Coaches and their particular offenses and defenses have a whole lot to do with what players are looked at and overall taken in draft and FA choices. Some things to look at are...

Coach Mularkey...He likes quick footed QB's, bruising RB's, and to run trick plays (most coaches do this very little, he does this only a slight bit more which is every now and then). He likes punishing run blocking and playaction.

Coach Smith...Covets pass rushing DL's and punisging Secondaries

Coach VanGorder...Likes sideline to sideline OLB's with good hips and a nasty MLB

With this being the case, I hope that you get a better idea of who and what we are looking for. Coach Smith and Mr. Dimitrioff have both stated that they are looking at certain prototypes for every position that fits the mold of their new team philosophies.

Nice post and only too true.

This is a good reality. This is why any of the defensive names being thrown out there -- dorsey, gholston, c long -- would all be good pickups. Also, Jake Long on the OL -- who is much stronger run blocking than pass protection.

I like smash mouth, Steelers circa 2002/03, football.

I don't know how many games we'll win, but I hope to see some hard hits on the field. Our highlight film used to be Vick running around for his life and making something out of nothing. Our new game highlight films should be of our defense laying someone out or our OL + RB ploughing over someone.

I got really fired up a few nights ago while researching the new guys in FO. They are not whay Mayock and some others are guessing. These guys are a crew with nothing to lose and everything to prove. The moves are going to seem a bit off and exciting at the same time. They will be looking for instant impact players early and possibly future players later on. This is just my guess, but they are going to want to make a atatement of who they are before and after the draft. Most fans have gotten used to conservatism. I guess the cuts didn't shake them that much. Like I said a couple of nights ago. I'm over trying to guess who we get at this point. I'm more interested in overall philosophies.

Legion -- I'm with you on guessing what is going to happen and focusing on philosophies, that's why I was asking on another thread about the area of cap space and next moves.

You've summarized the coaching philosophies pretty well -- and it's good to see a cross-position focus of strength, hard-nosed football. I think we've only seen that on one side of the football lately, and with Mora's regime -- they were about speed, elusiveness, and a ton of zone schemes on defense.

On a similar subject, culture -- I like what I'm seeing there. TD, Smith, and the rest of the staff all seem to be men of character. I do like how Dimitroff seems to use the media well. He's honest, gives enough details, but remains elusive -- so does Smith. Smith seems to be a man of his word. I believe the culture and leadership these two possess will greatly aid this organization in both the near and long term.

Finally on another side note, I like Smith handled the whole D-Hall thing in Indy. He didn't say much, and then he sat down with D-hall and at least seemed to calm him. Hopefully, if D-Hall is not traded, all is now well and they respect each other's role in the organization.

I agree with you on the character and culture. On a position note, I say a lot of negative things about Ryan, but in all actuality he is probably okay. What I think though is that in our current state we can ill afford to pay a guy that much to ride the pines for a year while we have a weak defense in all three sets (DLine, LB corps, and secondary) and we really need an OLine (for a few years now) and we are not set in RB. You can win using the current philosophies with a devastating defense, strong OL, above average RB, and a mediocre (and cheap) QB. If we take Ryan, I'll accept that there is something that I don't know, but as of now it wouldn't SEEM like the best move.
