Cut List:

Player___________2008 Addition to Cap if Cut___2007Salary_____2007 Signing Bonus______Signed Thru

Wayne Gandy____$3,501,500__________________$3,500,000___ $250,000____2008

Byron Leftwich___$2,350,000__________________$2,350,000____$2,350,000____2008

Rod Coleman____$2,084,000___________________$4,000,000 ___$1,917,500 ___2009

Lewis Sanders___$595,000_____________________$595,000 ___$25,000_______2008

Marcus Wilkins___$428,334_____________________$595,000 ___$166,666_____2009

Jamin Elliott______$360,000____________________$360,000 ___$0___________2008

Alge Crumpler____-$2,318,339__________________$1,000,000 ___$1,700,836__2010

These moves free up 7 million dollars towards this years cap. Crumpler actually cost us money to cut him, but evidently the Falcons didn't want him making 3-4 million a year until 2010, so they decided to eat it all now and get it over with.

Possible Future Cut List:

Warrick Dunn_____$3,250,000__________________$3,250,000___$3,028,332_____2008

Kynan Forney____$2,755,000___________________$2,750,000___$1,097,000____2008

Keith Brooking___$2,612,774___________________$4,900,000___$2,292,226_____2009

Lawyer Milloy____$1,003,000___________________$1,000,000___$833,333______2008

Joey Harrington__$750,000_____________________$750,000___$1,350,000______2008

Joe Horn________($1,000,000)__________________$1,000,000___$1,000,000____2010

Dunn and Forney probably have the best chance of getting cut off of this list which would free up $6 million dollars towards this year's cap.

It all of these guys are cut it will free up another 9.5 million dollars on the cap this year. For a total of 16.5 million freed up by cutting players.

Note: These numbers tell us how much money it free's up for 2008. By cutting them now (and subsequently eating the salary bonus's owed to these players this year, which is roughly 24 million dollars) these moves will have freed up 40 million dollars for the 2009 salary cap if all players listed are cut.

I like it.......

2008 is going to be a "tough" year and we are going to be a young team.....may only win 4 games again but we will get an influx of young talent this year through draft mainly and a several young free agents and then in 2009 we will have a lot of cap room and after 2009 draft and free agency we will be ready to contend again.

I like it......as you know, its better to pull the bandaid "right off!" than peel it back slower...:D

Horn won't be cut -- he has a guarentee of 7 million on the first 2 years of his contract whether he is on the team or not

I don't know who will get cut that is left. I was just listing the numbers for everybody I had heard rumors for. I personally would not cut Horn this year. I would cut Dunn and Forney for sure. I would leave Harrington on the team as a training camp body, and after that I might release him. I would try to talk Brooking into a 1-2 year contract extension where we would basically restucture his current contract with the extension to make it more cap friendly, and so he could retire as a Falcon. Chemistry and locker room leadership is important in the NFL, and for the Falcons Brooking is numero uno. I would keep Milloy around, he is in his last year of this contract anyways.

I wonder if Brooking has already agreed to accept a situational role as a OLB and restructure accordingly? I still think he has plenty to offer in that role. I just don't think he has the strength to play in the middle.

If he restructurs can the Falcons free up a lot of the cap room that would be gained from a release?

His general good health may be the only reason he survived today's announcement. He does take the field.

In another thread, there was a link to an NFL.com article that said Crumps cap hit for this year is $5.1 Million and the money could be better used elsewhere. How does that square with your figure??

I saw that and I also saw an artical saying he was one of the highest paid TEs in the league, so I would have thought we would have saved money????????????????????????

I just hope we make good decisions for once. I read something the other day that all of the Colts 22 starters were drafted by the Colts. That was really surprising to me. I think the Falcons need to start at the center position and move out from there. The baddest RB/QB's in the league are nothing without an OL. We gain nothing by drafting McFadden in the 1st round (if we even get a chance at him). I agree with your mock draft of drafting Jake Long. He's a freaking STUD!!!

Dunn should go by trade for a 6 or 7th rd pick 08 or 09 and keep the rest

The Falcons can designate two June 1st cuts which will hold off about 2M for next in unexpired bonus of the 9M. This would mean a gain of around 3.4-1.3(roughly)=2.1 of cap space free for 2008.

Check Crump's status at the beginning of training camp, wherever that is and I will bet it says Crumpler out to have his knees scoped again.
