Team officials call defensive coordinator leading candidate

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Published on: 01/23/08

Mike Smith, Jacksonville's defensive coordinator, is the leading candidate for the Falcons head coach position, according to team officials familiar with the process.

While Smith is the top choice, as of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, he had not been offered the job.

Speaking to the AJC at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on Tuesday, new general manager Thomas Dimitroff said the field of candidates for the vacant position was down to four Smith, Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Dimitroff was still in Mobile Wednesday morning and it was not known the exact timetable for a decision to be made.
