Posted by Mike Florio on January 16, 2008, 2:09 p.m.

A league source tells us that Colts coach Tony Dungy will step down, and that assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell will take the reins.

More to come.

Here i will be nice...please do not post things that have no truth or any reliable source on here...this post really needs to be ON THE AROUND THE NFL THREAD....stop taking up space with crap that has nothing to do with the FALCONS. Thanks :D

Actually this does have bearing on the Falcons because Caldwell was on our short list. Why do you relax and check yourself dude.

Actually this does have a lot to do with the Falcons. Caldwell was one of the finalists for the job of the Falcons HC position and who is the person quite a few people thought would get the job. Also name calling is a no no on this board as a word of wisdom you might want to tone it down a little if you want to last here longer.

To be fair, no one saw the hiring of Dimitroff coming - although he was interviewed and mentioned as a candidate for GM. Most- including myself - felt that Heckert was a lock once the Carroll talk ceased. Similarly, Caldwell (was) still available and although pundits are saying it's between Garrett and Ryan, who knows who the FO will end up hiring? Thus, the fact (if the report is right) that Caldwell is to be the HC in Indy, marks one more off the HC list in ATL.

From the sportingnews

Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy is denying a report that he has made a decision to leave the team.

According to ProFootballTalk.com, a league source said Dungy was stepping down and assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell would become the head coach.

But Dungy told ESPN.com he is still going through the process and should be ready to make the decision public by Saturday or Sunday. He also is reported as saying the first person -- other than his family -- to know the decision will be Colts owner Jim Irsay.

Even before the Colts were eliminated from the playoffs, Dungy had admitted to pondering stepping down as head coach. Dungy's son James committed suicide in December of 2005, and he has talked about spending time with his other five children and his wife, Lauren.

Dungy, who is 52, has a record of 127-65 in 12 years of coaching and 73-23 with the Colts.
