Why is the media so in love with USC.........

Recommended Posts

for the same reason that USC is in every ones top 5 for 2008 LSU is not. USC is losing Keith Rivers, Sedrick Ellis, Sam Baker, John David Booty just to name a few and yet the media keeps saying that these guys are the team to beat because they have great recruiting and talent. Well if that was the case Notre Dame should be in the top 5 for 2008 as well because they have had great recruiting classes over the past 3-4 years. I really don't understand why these guys are such media darlings

Well first off, Notre Dame hasn't proven to be consistent at anything other than being mediocre, so no reasonable voter would put ND near the top of the list. Secondly USC has proven to be consistently one of the very best programs in the country year in and year out with top recruiting classes each year. So, it's just like the pros; people talk up the teams that have been on top until they fall. USC deserves the respect they get because they have been the most consistent program over the last 6-7 years.

Add in the fact that they will have at least 3 5-star RBs, and two 5-star QBs competing for the job (one of which, Mitch Mustain, was rated along with Matt Stafford as the top QB recruit of that year). Their defense is loaded, with 2 of their 3 stud LBs coming back, and perhaps the best Safety in the nation, Taylor Mays, coming back.

USC re-loads better than anyone else. They have a 5-star at just about every position, and their depth is un-paralleled. It is not a stretch to say they will be the most talented team in the country, maybe for a few years to come.

Maybe because they've won their conference SIX straight times and can claim TWO national titles during that span. If you think that's not that impressive, check out their BCS bowl record (5-1). No other program can claim that right now, or even come close.

LSU has won TWO BCS titles outright and IM pretty sure their Bowl record is dang impressive as well.

And besides, what the heck does those accomplishments have to do with PRE-SEASON RANK.

That's supposed to be based on players that are returning.

It's a joke if USC is ranked in the top 2 with everyone they are losing on both sides of the ball.

Are you seriously asking what the last 5-6 seasons has to do with pre-season rank? Unless you have a crystal ball, all we have to go on is the past. USC has already proven they can lose numerous first round picks and Heisman trophy winners, and still win their conference and BCS bowls. LSU hasn't won their conference six straight years, but they are the closest program to USC the last 5-6 years. Sure, the Pac-10 probably isn't as strong as the SEC, but USC blew out Arkansas twice (including an SEC West champion Ark).

For the record, I don't think USC should be #1 pre-season, but it's far from a joke.

There is not a single team in the PAC 10 that is even close to being on the same level as USC. THAT'S why they are routinely ranked in the Top 5 every year. Because everyone knows they'll be the PAC 10 champs ang go to the Rose Bowl.

You guys are acting like the media WANTS USC to be the best team in the PAC 10 and one of the Top 5 programs in the nation instead of the fact that they ARE.

Losing the guys they are losing will be nothing to USC. They've got new guys who will step right in and play at the same level as the guys who are leaving. It's really not that hard to figure out-- they're the best program in college football.

They deserve respect. they don't deserve to have a slot to be ranked #1 or #2 in preseason polls every year. That's what's wrong with the BS...I mean BCS. They don't don't get to be #1 every year in the preseason polls.just because a voter feels USC has reloaded.

I actually thought it was a decent question?!? People say USC reloads year after year but so does LSU, grant it Pete Carroll could POSSIBLY coach circles around Les Miles(notice possibly) but talent wise I believe the Tigers reload just as well.

Let's look at recruiting 2002:USC 13TH/ LSU 15TH

2003: USC 3RD/ LSU 1ST

2004 :USC 1ST/ LSU 2ND

2005: USC 1ST/ LSU 22ND(drop-off year after Saban departed)

2006: USC 1ST/ LSU 7TH

2007: USC 2ND/ LSU 4TH

CURRENT 2008: USC 11TH/ LSU 8TH

Guys, Headshot put it even more clearly for the folks screaming about USC being ranked so high pre-season. It's not that they are necessarily better than LSU. It's more based on how they've dominated the Pac-10 (like FSU in the 90s) and keep racking us BCS bowl wins.

Indeed they are right now. They could lose their entire starting UNITs IMO and still be the class of that conference.
