Next year's Dogs better than this year's?

Published on: 12/18/07

A look at Georgia's possible starters for the 2008 season:

OFFENSE

" SE: A.J. Green, true freshman. Considered the top receiver in the country by many experts.

" LT: Trinton Sturdivant, sophomore. Started all 12 games as a true freshman.

" LG: Clint Boling, sophomore. Started nine games as a true freshman on the right side.

" C: Chris Davis, sophomore. Will move from guard to center.

" RG: Justin Anderson, freshman. Could be the strongest of all the offensive linemen.

" RT: Vince Vance, junior, or Kiante Tripp, sophomore. Both have long arms and good feet. A matter of who matures faster.

" TE: Tripp Chandler, senior: Became a reliable receiver and solid blocker.

" QB: Matthew Stafford, junior. His decision-making has improved every season.

" FB: Brannan Southerland, senior. Reliable and steady blocker who can catch.

" TB: Knowshon Moreno, sophomore. Should become the first back-to-back 1,000-yard rusher in the Mark Richt era.

" FLK: Mohamed Massaquoi, senior. Returned to form as a junior and could be a vital part of the offense.

DEFENSE

" DE: Roderick Battle, junior. Started every game, although not a pass-rushing threat.

" DT: Jeff Owens, senior. Has 23 starts and always takes a double-team in the middle.

" DT: Geno Atkins, junior. Deceptively strong and good with leverage.

" DE: Jeremy Lomax, senior or Jarius Wynn, senior. Lomax is finally healthy, and his past three games were his best three. Wynn has the speed to be a pass rusher.

" SLB: Akeem Dent, sophomore. Settled into his role late, but will have plenty of competition for his spot.

" MLB: Dannell Ellerbe, senior. Defensive leader who led the team in tackles with 85.

" WLB: Rennie Curran, sophomore. Most likely a starter at that position.

" WC: Bryan Evans, junior. Fastest player on the team but will have to hold off Prince Miller.

" SS: Reshad Jones, sophomore. A playmaker who had 51 tackles despite starting only one game.

" FS: CJ Byrd, senior. A reliable quarterback of the defense with a body big enough to stop the run.

" SC: Asher Allen, junior. Second on the team in tackles with 55.

OTHERS TO WATCH:

" Caleb King, redshirt freshman, RB: Moreno will be the focus of the running game but King will provide Georgia with an inside-outside attack. He has enough speed to take the corner and the hands to catch screens and go the distance.

" Akeem Hebron, sophomore, LB: Hebron will be back after a year at Georgia Military College. Hebron was considered one of the top prospects of the 2006 class. He was an Army All-American and received five stars from Scout.com. He might be the fastest linebacker on the team.

" Carlton Thomas, true freshman, RB: Thomas is a third-down specialist. At 5-7, 175, he is an explosive change of pace who can make anybody miss in space.

" Blair Walsh, true freshman, K: Walsh will take over for Brandon Coutu and continues a tradition of strong legs at Georgia. Walsh is solid from 55 yards and in. He made two from 59 yards in 2007. He also attempted a 67-yard field goal as a senior in high school and had the leg but missed it to the right.

Finally, an experienced offensive line, and generally no glaring weaknesses.

Injuries could always bring us down, but Stafford plays pretty safe, and if Moreno goes down we have King. King, being a freshman, probably doesn't strike fear into the hearts of many, but that's what I was saying about Knowshon all this past year.

And according to Asher Allen's father, King is actually better than Moreno.

Be afraid!

Do you think we will use that small true freshman back this season? I figured he would RS.

I mean, we have a decent derth of young RB's...give the guy an extra year.

He will probably be the most popular guy on campus when everything is said and done...the small guys always are.

He'd be returning punts.....Flowers and Henderson graduate...and I honestly don't think we can afford to have Allen return punts too....he'd get worn down..and he's too valuable to risk...

Yes carlton thomas will play right away IMO.. as mr. pickles said he will be on special teams. he may play the gunner, the return guy. Come in on 3rd downs. He is very versatile and UGA will be redshirting richard samuel and djax so our rbs are fine for the future.

Ah OK, he can play ST's. Awesome...hopefully he can aptly step into the decent sized shoes that Henderson left behind. It woud be nice to have the same guy doing it for more than 2 seasons though.

I figure then he will start ST's...and get a couple touches in the blow out games.

That's the whole purpose of Carlton. He is a bigtime special teamer. Also he will be used out of the backfield on 3rd downs when it fits his skill set. This guy is going to be awesome for us and many are calling him the top sleeper in this class.

I doubt UGA goes NC next year though. I think they come out with 2 losses again. Absolutely BRUTAL schedule. If they can get through with only 1 loss and a SECCG they should get a NC bid.

IMO it's not as brutal as fans think. I really think our schedule is very winnable next year and uga will go through with 1 loss on the season.. I also think the two bye weeks will be huge for UGA.

Stafford, A.J Green and Moreno is going to be a leathul combination. Most likly going to be the best offense in Georgia history. You really have to give the nod to Rict for going all the way up to New Jearsy and stealing Knowshawn.

Completely agree.. It's going to be amazing with caleb king, momass, tavarres king, israel troupe, walter hill, aaron white.. the list goes on and on and on.. :D

And most were predicting 2 or 3 losses? Doesn't look like it from here.

This was just an early prediction, but proves a point nonetheless.:lol::lol::lol:

I still feel like there's no reason this years team couldn't have done it. The talent was there even with the injuries and that brutal schedule ended up not being all that brutal after all as the Vols, Arizona State and apparently now Auburn all stink!

Talented...of course. However with unpredictable injuries and this staff...I'll believe it when I see it.

Alright...I'm just about done being Debbie Downer.
