Heisman Awards - You Can't Keep Dixon Down

GREAT story in this week's Oregonian newspaper about Dennis Dixon: the Oregon standout QB who many projected to be a Heisman finalist until a few weeks ago a torn knee ligament ruined the Ducks chances.

I'm a big supporter of this guy, he's got everything the Falcons need: an accurate passing QB, stands tall in the pocket -OR- uses his flat-out speed to scramble. Plus this kid has the mental skills & leadership quality you want, Check this out a 3.33 GPA, strong arm, quick release and Coach Dennis Erickson said "very accurate". I believe Coach Belotti is right, Dixon will make some noise in the NFL!!!

Anyway this is a long read - but a good one for all D.D. fans:

BRIAN MEEHAN

The Oregonian

EUGENE -- On a gloomy mid-November evening before a critical game against Arizona, No. 2-ranked Oregon still glows with ambitious thoughts as quarterback Dennis Dixon moves effortlessly through practice at the Moshofsky Center.

Dixon's apparent recovery from a knee "sprain" against Arizona State lifts his teammates. They have no idea he is running on a torn left knee ligament and that their hopes for a berth in the national championship game are doomed.

Six days later, Dixon crumpled to the turf at Arizona Stadium and Oregon's dream season turned into a nightmare. Rarely has one injury sparked such a freefall. But Dixon is that rarest of athletes, a leader who makes everybody on his team better. The rest of the season provided evidence that Dixon is the most valuable player in college football.....

but lets triple post because this still pisses me off today

what bigger Heisman moment is there then Dixon breaking a 45 yd td run on a torn acl

the story of this kid would have been great

my thing is not even an invite?????

People didn't know his ACL was torn before that run against Arizona, and it was 39 yards not 45.

I like Dixon...I think he's got heart...I think he can throw the ball, though he has some significant mechanical issues he'll have to address to survive in the NFL. What's left to be seen is how he'll heal, and whether or not he'll still be capable of those explosive runs, to go along with his ability to throw the ball...but let's be realistic about his Heisman status. This season saw several great players do incredible things this season...

McFadden rushing for 321 yards in one game...and let's not forget his complete dismantling of the No 1 defense in the land, LSU Tigers....

Tebow has had an unbelievable season...22 rushing TDs, 838 yards rushing, 29 passing TDs, 3132 yards passing, 177.8 QB rating...it's hard to top this season.

Colt Brennan has had a terrific season, and his career has been unbelievable, and he's achieved so many milestones, I couldn't even begin to list them all here

Then there's Kevin Smith. He's leading the nation in rushing with 2448 yards...181 shy of breaking Barry Sanders' single season record...and he's also got 29 rushing TDs. He's done all of this in near complete obscurity.

Chase Daniel has had a marvelous season...3951 yards, 33 TDs vs 9 INTS, and an unheard completion % of 70.5%.

What do all of these guys have in common? They FINISHED their season...and that's important. I know that Dixon's injury wasn't something he ran out to do to himself, but in the end, the fact that these guys played a complete season, and Dixon missed 4 games this season is huge. They can't give a Heisman to someone who misses 1/3 of the season...and they can't invite him to the ceremony, and leave someone who's played all season, and accomplished incredible milestones, at home...can't be done. Dixon will have a chance to attain bigger successes in the NFL...but unfortunately, he simply hasn't done enough for the Heisman...

How is that the same thing? He's good, but the dude got hurt, and you can't just leave out other deserving guys who have played the entire season just to make him feel better. You can't make a spectacle of a moment after the fact, regardless of how it looks now.

a 39 yd rush is the same as a 45 yd rush basically lollllll

again I am in no way saying any of the 4 arent deserving but is Dixon not???

Brennan & Dixon missed the same amount due to injuries

there is no rule to only inviting 4

Tebow

DM

Dixon

SMith

Brennan

Daniels

should have been invited

Brennan missed 1 entire game, and played against Nevada. Dixon has a torn ACL, and will be missing his 3rd game (Oregon's bowl game). 3 1/2 if you count the 2nd half of the Arizona game, like you say. The 4 invited are playing RIGHT NOW, at a very high level while Dixon, unfortunate as it may be, is sitting in Eugene.

so Dixon missed a total of 1 more game than Brennan

I never said the bowl game counted. I really don't know why I'm arguing this with you, seeing as you're the biggest Pac-10 homer there is, so I digress.

to which I corrected you that Brennan missed 1 full game, Dixon missed two. Brennan played 2 plays in the Nevada game & Dixon played 1 qtr @ AZ. So Dixon missed 1 more game than Brennan & he doesnt get an invite?

He's going to miss 2 more games than Brennan when it is all said and done, and only played about half a quarter against Arizona if you want to be technical. The guy is done for the season, and regardless of his prior numbers, healthy players should get the nod over a guy who is severely injured. The only reason you are so pissed off is because he's your Pac-10 boy, hence you being the biggest **** homer on this board. You were talking mad ##### about Hawaii, and saying Washington was underrated, then once UH came back you backtracked and said Washington was an awful team.

again the bowl game doesnt count on his Heisman chances so he missed 1 game more than Brennan. Brennan played 2 plays against Nevada so what is your point with Dixon playing 1 qtr at AZ?

Dixon also beat ASU, USC & Michigan, Brennan beat Boise St.

everyone has there favorites man, Washington was definitely underrated but none of you guys said that until Hawaii was getting murdered. All I was pointing out was on paper there the worst team in the Pac 10 but they are realistically probably in the middle.

My point of ripping Hawaii is because as underrated as Washington was this is a Hawaii team who some of you were saying should play for the National title!!!, My point was they struggled against teams like San Jose St & Washington. Wash lead Hawaii 21-0 at one point In Honolulu no less!!.

I'm giving Hawaii the benefit of the doubt though even though I know what will happen in the SUgar Bowl but I will reseve anymore ripping until that game is played.

Everyone deserves there chance.
