Moreno unanimously selected SEC's freshman of the year

Published on: 12/05/07

Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno picked up some more hardware Wednesday. The redshirt freshman was the SEC coaches' unanimous selection for freshman of the year. He was the only unanimous selection among the eight recipients of awards.

He was named first-team All-SEC by coaches Tuesday. He was the first Georgia freshman to make the first team at that position since Herschel Walker in 1980.

On Wednesday Moreno also made the Associated Press All-SEC first team, which was selected by a regional media panel.

Undoubtedly, Moreno will be named to the all-freshman team when the league office releases it today.

Moreno rushed for 1,273 yards and 12 touchdowns. That rushing total is second only to Walker's freshman record of 1,616 in 1980. Moreno started the last six games after an injury to Thomas Brown. He topped the 100-yard mark in five of those games, and Georgia won all six.

Moreno also had 18 catches, fourth on the team, for 227 yards.

Three Arkansas players grabbed top individual honors in the coaches' voting: Running back Darren McFadden was named the offensive player of the year. Return specialist Felix Jones was named the specialist of the year. Center Jonathan Luigs was one of two awarded the Jacobs Trophy given to the league's top blocker. Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith was the other.

LSU's Glenn Dorsey was named the defensive player of the year.

Kentucky tight end Jacob Tamme was named the scholar-athlete of the year.

Mississippi State's Sylvester Croom grabbed coach of the year honors.

congrads to moreno. UGA's streak at the end had alot to do with his feats(feet). maybe he'll stick around long enough to make a big impression and not do the garrison hearst thing.(early NFL)

it's good to see felix jones get some sort of recognition because he is a very good back in his own rite.
