andre' woodson

qb, kentucky

war room analysis

strengths: is a good athlete who can make plays with his arm and legs. when striding into passes, shows the arm strength to make all the nfl throws with zip and accuracy. shows a nice touch on downfield passes when on his game. rarely throws passes up for grabs, and is content to throw away the ball to avoid sacks. when sensing pressure, shows the quickness and athleticism to avoid sacks and create something out of nothing. shows the athleticism and body control to re-set and throw accurately when scrambling.

weaknesses: is raw and inconsistent. too often does not stride into throws, simply flicking his arm and losing accuracy. almost always throws downfield passes with a lot of air under the ball, allowing defenders extra time to play the ball. plays in a wide-open, short passing attack in college, and must adjust a traditional nfl offense and line up under center much more frequently. does not consistently see underneath coverage, allowing too many tipped passes.

bottom line: woodson is one of the more frustrating quarterbacks we have graded this year. he no doubt has the physical tools to be a good nfl quarterback but must greatly improve his mechanics and accuracy to make it in the league. at times, he does everything right and becomes a game-changing quarterback who can carry a team. he improved a ton from his sophomore to junior season and again must show significant improvement in '07 to be a legitimate nfl prospect.

colt brennan

qb, hawaii

war room analysis

strengths: is super smart. reads defenses in a flash, and consistently makes the correct decision with the ball. is poised in the pocket, and does not get flustered if it collapses. moves nicely in the pocket, and steps up to avoid wide rushers. shows a very quick release. has the arm strength to make all nfl throws with zip, and is very accurate. is an outstanding leader.

weaknesses: lacks ideal height and uses a 3/4-arm, dart-like throwing motion -- gets a number of passes tipped at the line. plays primarily in a run-and-shoot offense, throwing short passes out of the shotgun formation -- will have a big adjustment to fit in a traditional nfl offense. needs a lot of work on his footwork during dropback. must better protect the ball when under duress.

bottom line: brennan, who almost stayed in the '07 draft, has put himself into position to be a first-round pick in '08. he must overcome the stigma attached to run-and-shoot quarterbacks because previous ones (i.e. david klingler and andre ware) flamed out quickly in the nfl. brennan's lack of height and throwing motion are concerns, but he has the athletic ability, arm strength, accuracy and poise to become a nfl starter. he won't help much as a rookie because of the big adjustment an nfl offense, but in time he will develop into a productive nfl quarterback who makes plays in key situations.

brian brohm

qb, louisville

war room analysis

strengths: is big, and has a strong arm -- makes all the throws with zip and accuracy. shows great throwing technique with footwork and delivery. shows a quick release. passes burst out of his hand and reach receivers in a flash. stays relaxed and poised in the pocket; doesn't panic under pressure and throw passes up for grabs. excels at moving around in the pocket to avoid sacks; has the size and strength to make strong throws while defenders are grabbing at him. can pull the ball down and scramble for a first down when needed, and is not afraid to lower shoulder and fight for yardage.

weaknesses: struggled to stay healthy throughout college career. missed games with variety of dings but biggest was torn acl sustained late in the 2005 season. injured wrist early in '06 season and had surgery sept. 17. occasionally will stare down his primary receiver, allowing defenders to close quickly and make plays on the ball. sometimes gets a little deliberate with throwing motion, slowing down just enough to allow defensive linemen to tip passes.

bottom line: brohm is big and has the arm strength to make every throw with zip and accuracy. considering he is the son of a coach and his brother coaches him at louisville, it is no shock that he has great footwork and technique and just about never makes a bad decision with the ball. he shows the athleticism to avoid sacks, the strong and accurate arm to make all the throws and the mind to minimize mistakes. brohm will be an nfl star.

the player evaluations are from 2006 game film. i'm not certain how up to date their ratings are. they say these are new, but war room has a tendency to throw on a new coat of paint and call it a new house. their mock draft was updated yesterday:

mock draft: round 1

pick team player pos school

1 (1) rams glenn dorsey dt lsu

rams officials would prefer an offensive tackle in the first round, but none grade out as high as dorsey. rams debate between dorsey and tcu's tommy blake, but are nervous about using # 1 pick on player with health questions.

2 (2) dolphins chris long de va.

the dolphins' defensive stars obviously are getting old, and long would give them a versatile lineman who can play both end and tackle.

3 (3) jets quentin groves de auburn

jets officials also would think about taking arkansas rb darren mcfadden here, but the team just spent big money locking up thomas jones. instead, the team should take an edge rusher for its 3-4.

4 (4) falcons brian brohm qb louisville

if brohm is available when the falcons pick in the first round, it's a forgone conclusion that coach bobby petrino will take his former college's quarterback.

5 (5) bengals keith rivers olb usc

the bengals may consider rb mcfadden, but with all their linebacker issues, they cannot pass on the super-athletic and versatile rivers.

6 (6) saints frank okam dt texas

the saints' interior defensive line consistently struggles to make impact plays and okam can be special.

7 (7) bills ryan clady* t boise st.

the bills' offensive line has been inconsistent in '07. clady would give them a youngster to align with jason peters and give them a pair of elite tackles.

8 (8) bears andre' woodson qb kentucky

rex grossman's days are done in chicago, and brian griese is only a stopgap solution. so the bears would be wise to gamble on the talented woodson, who has skyrocketed up draft boards the past 12 months

9 (9) raiders tommy blake de tcu

blake is widely considered as this draft's top defensive player. he may slide because of health concerns, but the raiders can take a chance on him.

10 (10) vikings king dunlap t auburn

the vikings have struggled with their offensive line, especially on the right side. the very athletic dunlap can help solve the issue.

11 (11) patriots rey maualuga* ilb usc

(from san francisco) the patriots' inside linebackers, tedy bruschi, junior seau and mike vrabel, are getting old. the young and ultra-gifted maualuga would fit the bill.

12 (12) eagles kenny phillips* s miami (fl)

the eagles really wanted s brandon meriweather in the 2007 draft, so they fill the need with phillips, his former college teammate.

13 (13) broncos darren mcfadden* rb arkansas

with travis henry's short career in denver just about over, the broncos should consider grabbing an rb high for the first time in the mike shanahan era.

14 (14) chiefs jake long t michigan

the chiefs have recently lost many good linemen to retirement and free agency. gm carl peterson must find a top-flight left tackle to protect future qb brodie croyle's blind side. they can gamble on the overrated long here.

15 (15) seahawks early doucet wr lsu

the seahawks have struggled to find a consistent, healthy young receiver opposite deion branch. doucet can become their no. 1 wideout in a few seasons.

16 (16) cardinals malcolm jenkins cb ohio st.

antrel rolle has yet to establish himself and the cardinals still need a secondary boost. jenkins is tall and very gifted.

17 (17) texans tony hills t texas

the texans will be hoping jenkins drops here, but with him gone they can consider hills, a very athletic former tight end, and arizona db antoine cason.

18 (18) cowboys updated antoine cason cb arizona

(from cleveland) the cowboys need secondary help and should grab the smooth, athletic and versatile cason, who has all the intangibles to contribute at either corner or safety as a rookie.

19 (19) chargers sam baker t usc

the chargers already have a great left tackle in marcus mcneill. baker would give them another good athlete to shore up the right side of their line.

20 (20) lions ray rice* rb rutgers

the lions' rushing attack has struggled with kevin jones returning from his foot injury. rice would be the ideal back for their pass-happy offense.

21 (21) redskins lawrence jackson de usc

the redskins, although improved, still need pass rushers. jackson has solid technique for one.

22 (22) titans desean jackson* wr cal

the titans can grab the explosive, playmaking jackson to help vince young.

23 (23) ravens michael oher* t ole miss

the ravens can grab another young ot here to make sure they are well prepared for jonathan ogden's nearing retirement.

24 (24) panthers colt brennan qb hawaii

with jake delhomme (elbow) getting up there and his status unknown for 2008, the panthers can go with a qb who can challenge for playing time as rookie.

25 (25) buccaneers sedrick ellis dt usc

the bucs' defense has been good in '07, but here's too good of a chance to get their type of defensive tackle.

26 (26) giants mike jenkins cb south fla.

the giants have been trying to shore up cornerback with youth. jenkins is a super-athletic corner with rare toughness and competitiveness.

27 (27) jaguars derrick harvey* de florida

the jaguars' pass rush has been inconsistent in '07. having harvey would certainly help that.

28 (28) packers dejuan tribble cb boston coll.

the steelers think about grabbing a young offensive lineman, but with continued concerns at cornerback, they should gamble on the very talented but undersized tribble.

29 (29) cowboys andre caldwell wr florida

with terry glenn and terrell owens both getting old, the cowboys can grab the young and elusive caldwell to develop for the future.

30 (30) packers heath benedict t newberry

the packers' offensive line has struggled to open running lanes. benedict is a huge and athletic type who can help them become stronger and more physical.

31 (31) 49ers adarius bowman wr oklahoma st.

(from indianapolis) the 49ers need weapons for qb alex smith. bowman is a nice, big possession receiver.

32 (32) patriots red bryant dt tex. a&m

if they don't ultimately lose this pick in the aftermath of 'videogate', as usual, the patriots could surprise everyone and go with massive and athletic bryant to add some youth to their aging defensive line.

mock draft: round 1

13 (13) broncos darren mcfadden* rb arkansas

with travis henry's short career in denver just about over, the broncos should consider grabbing an rb high for the first time in the mike shanahan era.

14 (14) chiefs jake long t michigan

i am not a fan of long, so i could see him falling, but no way does mcfadden fall to 13.
