terps' big win might send jackets to boise

published on: 11/26/07 georgia tech's bowl picture might have taken a turn toward idaho on saturday when maryland thumped n.c. state 37-0.

the strong performance by maryland (6-6) could leapfrog it past georgia tech (7-5) and send the yellow jackets to the humanitarian bowl in boise as the least desirable among the acc's eight bowl-eligible teams.

"no decision has been made," emerald bowl executive director gary cavalli said sunday, but he listed a few reasons his san francisco-based bowl might favor maryland despite tech's one-game advantage in overall and acc record:

" "you always like a fresh team you haven't had before," he said. tech played in the emerald two years ago.

" "you end the season with a 37-0 win on the road, that's definitely going to pique people's interest."

" "is there a possibility of a coaching change [at tech]?"

an ncaa rule says "all conference teams with winning records must be placed in one of the contracted bowl games before any institution with a record of six wins and six losses may be placed in a contracted bowl game." but acc associate commissioner mike finn said the ncaa told the acc the rule doesn't govern the selection order and only specifies that no winning team can be left without a bowl in favor of a 6-6 team.

the meineke car care in charlotte, the music city in nashville and the emerald share the acc's fifth, sixth and seventh picks. if they don't agree, though, they pick in order of payout: nashville, charlotte and san francisco. the three are likely to be choosing among wake forest, florida state, tech and maryland.

this is how things shape up:

" virginia tech: goes to the orange bowl if it wins the acc championship game. goes to the chick-fil-a bowl or the champs sports bowl if it doesn't. the hokies were in the chick-fil-a last year but travel well and won 10 games.

" boston college: goes to the orange bowl if it wins the acc championship game. goes to the chick-fil-a bowl or the champs sports bowl if it doesn't. chick-fil-a could market heisman trophy candidate matt ryan as a possible future falcons quarterback, but bc's small fan base is a negative.

" clemson: probably goes to the gator bowl as a 9-3 team coming off a victory over rival south carolina.

" virginia: probably goes to the champs sports bowl in orlando but could wind up in the chick-fil-a at a surprising 9-3.

" wake forest: the 8-4 demon deacons fit well in the meineke car care bowl in charlotte. their final regular-season game was in nashville, so they're not a great fit for the music city.

" florida state: music city probably chooses the seminoles over maryland and georgia tech. fsu and tech have identical acc and overall records, but fsu has a larger fan base and tv appeal.

" maryland: emerald bowl

" georgia tech: humanitarian bowl at 2 p.m. new year's eve
