morrow 3-of-17 from the field

published on: 11/19/07 st. thomas, virgin islands jack frost said sunday that he was going to make note of winthrop's record against acc schools before playing georgia tech in the paradise jam, but did not want to jinx the eagles.

frost, of winthrop's media relations staff, had nothing to do with what happened in tech's 79-73 loss. the jackets went into a deep freeze while blowing a 10-point second-half lead. frost and fans from the rock hill, s.c., school were sure happy about it, though, after the eagles (3-0) moved to 2-29 against acc schools. nine days earlier, tech (2-2) lost its season opener at home to unc-greensboro, a southern conference school that was 0-24 against the acc.

coach paul hewitt looked forward as much as backward and not in a blindly optimistic way. the tough part of tech's nonconference schedule is ahead including notre dame tonight, a nov. 27 game at indiana, a dec. 1 contest at vanderbilt, a dec. 18 game against kansas, a jan. 9 game at georgia and a feb. 9 game at connecticut.

"i'm disappointed in these two losses," hewitt said. "people are going to point to the conferences they come from, and rightfully so. but we know that they were good basketball teams, and we had to play good games to beat them, and we didn't."

this one began with promise. after leading 39-33 at halftime on the strength of 57.7 percent shooting, the jackets pushed the lead to 45-35 on lewis clinch's short shot with 17:51 left. then the bottom fell out.

guard anthony morrow, who led tech in scoring in each of its first three games, took 17 shots sunday. he hit just three. winthrop coach randy peele noted that morrow wasn't exactly hitting his shots and decided to let him fire away.

"the biggest thing is in the second half, it became a game where we just packed it in," peele said. "we stopped stretching our defense out and tried to get tight and guard the drive and basically rebound."

the eagles, who beat notre dame in the first round of the ncaa tournament last march, quickly turned a 10-point deficit into a two-point lead as tech wavered.

first, senior point guard chris gaynor made a 3-pointer for winthrop. then, senior forward taj mccullough of atlanta's carver high stole the ball from clinch and fed gaynor for another 3-pointer.

next, winthrop freshman forward mantoris robinson stole the ball from clinch, and tech's matt causey fouled him intentionally to prevent a layup. after making one of two free throws, the 5-foot-10 gaynor rebounded morrow's missed 3-pointer at the other end and drained one of his own to tie the game at 45 with 15:56 left.

"we started getting too comfortable. we got a 10-point lead, and we were like, 'ok, we can take a break,'?" senior forward jeremis smith said. "they didn't make it tough on us. we made it tough on ourselves. we didn't execute."

the game was last tied at 68, on a banked 3-pointer by causey with 3:02 left. the eagles salted it away at the free-throw line, often rebounding the misses.

winthrop has been to seven of the past nine ncaa tournaments with automatic bids as champions of the big south conference. they started three seniors, too, but the jackets lost because morrow and clinch their top two shooters lost their shooting touches in going a combined 3-of-18 from the field in the second half, and tech kept losing track of winthrop shooters.

"we made mistakes on the perimeter that really allowed them to capitalize," hewitt said. "we left [michael jenkins, 20 points] open. we missed rebounds on free throws. we were not finishing plays. we got comfortable."

problem is we lost our pgs, next year that problem will be fixed. iman shuppert might even be better than crittenton.

so this year will just be a very down year for you guys.. good then uga can count a win against gt in both sports now.. and then baseball as well..

better or worse than in 2005 when we had zam fredrick leading our team, its hard to tell. both seasons will probably be forgettable. dry.gif

uga still probably won't win tho, considering they've suspended half of their team. laugh.gif

not sure since uga has made a habit of beating gt in football, baseball, and basketball most years.. but you are right gt should win, but you guys should have beat uga the year you went to the championship game and you couldn't then either.. so there is no telling what happens.. lol

i think the running trend between the two teams right now is that the home team always wins by a lot. i believe tech plays at uga this year, so that doesn't bode well.

thats why i do not like basketball. in basketball they only have to stay for 1 year, then they leave. football they have to stay for atleast 3 years. if nba/college made it atleast 2 years this probably wouldnt happen. hopefully 3years just like football.

it's very hard for coaches.. do you go with the great player for 1 year or the just below a great player for a guy who will be there for 3 to 4 years..

that would be nice. tech has been getting robbed for years with players entering the draft early. most recently javaris crittenton, thaddeus young, chris bosh, jarrett jack and could have had players like al harrington back in the day if not for them choosing the nba straight out of high school and now the whole 1-and-done thing. oh what could have been... sleep.gif

so this year will just be a very down year for you guys.. good then uga can count a win against gt in both sports now.. and then baseball as well..

when you actually have a talented team in b-ball then you can make a comment..

tech lost both its leading scorers in javaris crittenton and thaddeus young and more importantly there floor leader in west..

our two players went in the top 20 in the draft..when was the last time you guys could say that??

when was the last time you guys had a player drafted other than jarvis "bust" hayes?

1,143-1,050 all time bb record...wow impressive.. rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gif

outside florida and kentucky, the sec wasnt really that strong of a basketball conference last year, where as the acc had 8 teams get ncaa berths.

without a true pg, even a talented team can struggle against a mid major that has a player get hot and start knocking down all of his shots. this really isnt that surprising - its been happening for years. an upset? yes, but its not as bad as a supposed southern powerhouse barely beating colorado in football. laugh.gif

laugh.giflaugh.gif you got to be kidding.. comparing a beatdown by an inferior opponent who hasn't beat an acc school yet, but oh wait they did in beating gt to beating a big 12 team in football.. you lose.. laugh.gif

i don't even know what school you're talking about. winthrop is 3-0 and went to the dance last year if im not mistaken. unc greensville is 2-1 and that was the first game of the season. unc almost lost to davidson in their first game of the season. i dont know why youre making this such a big deal. youre really reaching with this one. its still november.
