great opinion piece of the uga celebration.. i don't want to hear anything about class from a team that runs reverse passes up by 24 points..

there are times when one is exposed to the pure hobbesian environment, where the laws of the jungle, not the law of man or god, rule supreme. as an example, it is thought that if one enters prison, the smartest strategic action to establish oneself on the right side of the foodchain is to fight someone the first day simply to show the other inmates that you are not to be trifled with. and the more frenzied the beating the better. far better to be thought of as crazed than considered polite and vulnerable. show everybody you are crazy and they are less likely to try you.

mark richt, polite and kind, acted like the latest inmate to arrive saturday. as you all know, richt ordered his players to incur a celebration penalty after georgia's first score. knowshon dove over the goal line for the game's first score and the entire team came out on the field to jump up and down, give the gator chomp, and dance, dance, dance! the celebration was unprecedented, drawing considerable criticism. it was shocking, bold, and just what the dawgs needed to set the tone in a series that has come to represent fear and sad defeat to the bulldog nation.

it was not the most polite or "classy" action, for sure, but it was necessary. just as the prisoner needs to establish his willingness for ruthlessness, the dawgs had to show that they were ready to fight. this willingness has at times seemed absent in jacksonville. the dawgs either got rolled by shiny pants or got all the bad breaks against zook or meyer. the defeats were either noncompetitive or excruciating and heartbreaking. the celebration announced that the dawgs were here to fight, openly and unabashedly. but frankly, i think the celebration was more about georgia, not florida.

our prisoner doesn't just fight to scare other inmates, he fights to show himself he can, girding himself for the long sentence ahead. it was meant to get the gators off their game, but more to get into georgia's head. it was calling the gators out for a fight and inspire some confidence. confidence that the dawgs have left back home on most trips to jacksonville. it's hard to play shy after that kind of spectacle.

other than a single terrible throw by stafford, the team played its best ball of the year saturday. the dawgs played like it meant something. and it meant more than they will know. finally, the gators have to refer to series history, class, jean shorts, or anything else we had to resort to when the scoreboard cruelly trumped all arguments.

as for class, i can certainly understand some of the criticism. we aren't accustomed to mark richt letting his team loose. the celebration was brash, ballsy, and on some level, crass. these aren't words commonly used to describe richt. but, when you've been dominated in a series by being flat, tight, and error prone, why not do something dramatic to loosen your players up? it's out of character, but it was a change that richt felt he needed to avoid another inevitable loss.

and i really don't want to hear about class from a team who runs reverse passes when they are up by 24 in the fourth quarter. go hit stafford while he's kneeling.

one of the articles linked claims it was the most classless act in the history of college football.

that guy thinks it was worse than the time(s) that entire teams have come out of the field and fought. miami comes to mind, swinging helmets and whatnot. or marcus vick stomping on a guy's leg. all we did was dance around a little, and then kick off from our own 6. considering how quickly florida scored from there, one might say it wasn't worth it.

but by the way we kept scoring on them for the rest of the game, i'd say it most certainly was worth it.

miami used to do the throat slash after every positive play. woody hayes punched a clemson player in the throat. lou holtz' last game was highlighted by a brawl that made miami/fiu look like a pillow fight.... but georgia bouncing and dancing = the most classless act in college sports history.... ok!!!!

much of gainesville has given me the props today. i have gotten a lot of "congrats on the win, yall won". i can only respond with, i didn't do anything to win but thank you anyways. there are whispers of herschel walker down here in the gville and the still dillusional fans quote "with our talent, we should score 50 a game and give up nothing, our coaches are terrible!" yes, i can hold my head a bit higher as i come into work with my uga hat on and georgia bulldogs water bottle. its a great day to be a dawg in gainesville, fl. i also love listening to the local talk radio with chris doering and adam reardon ( a hurricane fan). this morning on gator country radio, people were going on and on about the class of georgia. give me a break!! as i sat in the florida section, anyone want to guess how many toothless mullets i heard yell "break his leg!!" to lil herschel? or....lets suspend our players for an opening game against joe blow state school for the blind for buying weed from a cop and attempting to run!!! that will teach them all a lesson...or we could teach players on what language they speak in england.

classless act? i think not. like mark said, we needed to do something different because the "stoic" team was not playing so well lately. no, mark didn't expect the whole team to run on the field but it sure looks like a smart decision to me. call it what you want but a w is a w anyway you earn it.

i'm embarassed i didn't realize we had a college sports forum.

i'm with pretty much everyone else on the celebration...get over it! i loved it and thought it was just what we needed to help get over this mental edge they've had over us. we've had the talent for years but have come up short...we had to put everyone (most importantly the gators) on notice we came to win!

besides, i always think the gators get away with a ton of cheap stuff after the play against us that goes unnoticed. of course, i'm biased...

and how the heck has tebow been getting away with his little arm waving dance to get the crowd going every time he scores a touchdown or makes a big play? the minute a receiver from any other team scoring a touchdown does anything, they get an unsportsmanlike called on them. if anyone wants to blame the classiness of another team on florida losing, it's still and excuse...it's nice to know we could get in their heads so easily. go dawgs!!!
