georgia recruits among top in class

published on: 10/15/07 athens -- scout.com sent out new top 100 prospect rankings, and georgia still has three players in the top 40. wide receiver a.j. green (summerville, s.c.) was rated the no. 10 prospect. defensive tackle deangelo tyson (statesboro) was rated the no. 29 prospect. running back/linebacker richard samuel (cass) was rated the no. 40 prospect.

jamie newberg, a recruiting analyst for scout.com, sized up georgia's class for the ajc.

"georgia is not in a position where they have to sign certain prospects because they always recruit very well, and these dogs are young and talented," he said. "and once again they are bringing in a strong class with commitments from running backs richard samuel and carlton thomas, wide receivers a.j. green and tavarres king, defensive linemen deangelo tyson, toby jackson, jeremy longo and cornelius washington and some very good secondary guys.

"thomas is a steal from the sunshine state and could be the steal of the class," newberg said. "although he's small, thomas is a great back and pound for pound one of the nation's finest offensive prospects. green is a top 10 recruit regardless of position and should be an instant impact to the georgia offense. king is an explosive receiver that the bulldog offense needs. tyson is the nation's top interior defensive lineman, while jackson, washington and longo are all athletic off the edge.

"this is a top-10 class that is looking to just finish things off."

georgia, which has 20 commitments, is looking to grab a couple more offensive linemen, a running back, a linebacker and maybe a defensive back. the bulldogs may sign as many as 26 players in february.

linebacker akeem hebron also will be a part of the georgia class but won't count against the scholarship total because he was previously enrolled at georgia. hebron, who was expelled from school, is currently at georgia military college and is eligible to return to georgia in the fall.
