ok guys field position 101.

its 4th and 13 and your on your own 47 with 2 minutes left. no coach goes for it on 4th and 13 on their 47 yard line and here is why:

defense in the nfl can easliy stop that. joey does not have the arm strengh to force the secondary way back. all we would get is something under the coverage that eveyone on denfese closes in on.

so, its smarter to punt and here is why:

either way if you dont convert on 4th down or you punt, your denfense has to go 3 and out. if the saints do go 3 and out would you rather the saints punt from there 20? or do you want them to take the delay of game penalty on our 47 (assuming they could not get a single yard) step back 5 yards and punt that pins us back to our 20 with 30 seconds to go the distance.

its simple, you punt. the odds are greater that your defense stops the saints than you converting on 4th and 13. if you punt the saints have to start on their 20ish and

1) you can cause a tunover deep in their side of the field

2) or you can stop them and get the ball back somewhere back on the 47

going for it when the score is 22 to 16 is dummer because your not going to make 4 and 13 and your giving the saints 2 minutes to get in field goal range............................starting on your 47.

dont question coaches, thats why they coach and we think we can

well the question is have we 1 been able to stop anyone in the 4th?

2 sustain a drive for a touchdown...with joey at the helm?

since you felt this needed it's own topic i'll say it again!

yeah and then with less than 2 minutes in the game with it on the line and the other team only needing one first down to run out the clock we punt the ball!

if we had to hold the saints to one of set of downs we could have done it from mid field as well as anywhere else.

petrino knows nothing about nfl clock management.

you don't give the ball away when you need to score at the end of the game regardless of field position when one set of downs is all the other team needs to put it away!

4-13-atl 47 (1:58) 9-m.koenen punts 43 yards to no 10, center-46-m.schneck, fair catch by 16-l.moore.

lets say we go for it on 4th down and don't get the first... incomplete pass.

saints take over on downs.... at the 47 and fail... say they are inches short on 4th down and kick a field goal? 37 + 10 + 7 54 yarder? no way.

so they go for it and fail... we take over on downs which is what bobby wanted by punting the ball anyway!

the saints take over at mid field they are going run 4 straight rushing plays and eat the clock if they can and try not to make a mistake.

all they want is a first down... no matter where they are on the field.

by the way... they did get a first and run out the clock.

night.

if what you say is true - then he learned a lesson he will not forget. he has been in the league before and he has people around him who have years in the league - he had his reasons for doing what he did. i say no matter what he would have done in that situation you'd still be trowing him under the bus.

the most obvious reason in mind was that petrino knew that our offensive line could not stop a two legged kitten from sacking our qb in the time that it would take to complete a 13 yard pass.

jeff van note said petrino was right. you say he was wrong. who knows more about football, you or jeff van note?

if you want to bang on petrino, fine. he's made some mistakes. bang on those. this though was not a mistake. the majority of nfl coaches (according to jeff van note) would have done the exact same thing petrino did. give it up and move on. this was not a mistake by petrino.

see 'atlantaprodj' you cant even get anyone on this topic to agree with you. your whole argument is that if we stop them 3 and out that they are going to kick a field goal? that does not make sence with 30 seconds left and the lead. what they would have done is punted. pinning us back deep into our teritory with very little time left on the clock. you keep thinking that first they are going to try and kick a field goal:

"say they are inches short on 4th down and kick a field goal? 37 + 10 + 7 54 yarder? no way."

why? if they go three and out like you say and they are on the 37, they take the delay of game and punt, or go for it and get a yard. but, you make a 54 yard field goal sound impossible to do........at home.............. in a dome

this is football 101
