it seems that for the last 10 years or so, the teams that have had a big, playmaking safety has won the super bowl. here's my list if i can re-collect it:

2006 - bob sanders

2005 - troy polamalu

2004, 2003 - rodney harrison

2002 - john lynch

2001 - lawyer milloy (when he was younger and good, not old and slow like right now!)

2000 - rod woodson

1999 - ???

1998, 1997 - steve atwater

1996 - leroy butler

1995 - merton hanks

1994 - ???

1993 - darren woodson, etc.

where's our big, playmaking safety rich??? where is he?!!!

john lynch? really, well if he is an example of a big time playmaking saftey then i'm real happy you are not our gm

lynch has been a great safety in the nfl. one of the biggest hitters who can also break up a pass. you are crazy if you think lynch is not one of the best to play in the past decade or so.

i think safeties are a good barometer of success in the nfl. don't forget the falcons had success when they had top notch safeties. when the falcons could put on the field safeties like scott case, brian jordan and even eugene robinson who was very effective before the super bowl they had very good defenses. also we should have jumped on john lynch when tampa bay let him go. everytime i watch the broncos he is around the ball and more often than not making a play.

um, ed reed came into the league in 2002, not 2000 you may be thinking about rod woodson who was the ravens safety when they won that super bowl.

94 sf won so hanks would go there 95 dal won so woodson again i guess. 99 the rams won pretty much on offense alone

you are also forgetting all of those teams also had a great qb and/or rb and defense. atl doesnt have any of those.

in the draft baby! draft kenny phillips!!! he's the next ed reed/sean taylor. i guarantee it. i've been telling people how important a good safety is but all everyone cares about is a qb. a good safety can play as another linebacker while providing over the top help for corners. it's a very versatile position.
